Next set (have done 9mm w/TiteGroup and .40 w/Unique) I load will be first time with 10mm w/180gn JHP. Kinda like what the book shows on 800-x as being higher velocity with lower pressure.

Anyone have any experience of comments on loading 10mm or with 800-x powder?

Any and all comments appreciated!

For high velocity with heavier bullets in 10mm, IMR 800X can't be beat, but there is a downside. It meters like cornflakes. I have three Redding powder measures, two Hornady powder measures, and a Belding and Mull powder measure. None of them will meter 800X worth a darn. When I use it, I end up throwing a charge and then trickling it up to the desired weight, which is time consuming and tedious.

I have most of an 8 pound keg of 800X that I'm going to have to use up, but I'm dreading it.

Hope this helps.

Fred

Fred nailed it--a really good summary.

A few years ago, on another forum a reloader started chasing, IIRC, 1800+ fps with 135-gr. bullets in the 10mm. 800-X was the preferred powder. However, since he was content to shoot a few rounds at a time over the chrono, he was also content to trickle-charge each and every one. He also quit short of his goal after some pressure calcs suggested his secondary or tertiary pressure spike was over 60,000 psi.

Were I in Fred's shoes with that keg, I know I couldn't load 8 lbs of trickle charges. It'd become fertilizer, I'm afraid.

Good info guys! Thanks!

I'm guessing that it would be the same, but anyone used it in a Dillon dispenser?

9.5gr is my prefered SD load with 180gr gold dot.
I've went as high as 11gr 180gr hard cast but taming the recoil is like taming a canon on your hand. This is fired from a Glock 29 original barrel. I've used winchester or starline brass and makes a bulge on the brass, but with not relative flat primers.
Like everyone is saying here, you have better hand weigh each load.
A good source of 10mm 800x loads is Glock talk.

I use Blue Dot with 180gr gold dot's, and it is my favorite load. Not to bad for recoil either. Spot on accuracy. I shoot it out of my glock 20. No experience with the 800X but thought this may help if you have not bought the 800X yet. It meters well from my Hornady LNL.

800x is the key to great velocity in the 10mm. It works great. I have heard that others have problems with metering but I do not. My pro2000 press seems to jiggle the uniflow enough that I get +/- 0.1 grn routinely. Occasionally 0.2 grns but rarely.

I have read that others have hooked up eccentric weights and motors to shake the uniflow and achieved similar results. The two best I have heard are using an old fish air pump mounted to the uniflow and a torn apart vibrator. Both shake the same way I am told and achieve similar results.

I like 800x. Works great!

As stated above, if you do not want to weigh each and every charge forget the 800-X, yes even in your Dillon.

I have found Longshot to perform as well if not better than 800-X in my 10MMs and it meters well.

When you get tired of the terrible metering you get with 800x but you still want good velocity nd accuracy give Longshot a try. You will generate equal or greater velocity with good accuracy and it meters much better. I "heard" AutoComp also generates good velocity in the 10mm and being a ball powder it meters like water. HS-6 isn't bad either but it will generate slightly less velocity than 800x and Longshot.

I don't mind trickling. The only reason I haven't tried 800X is that I get all the velocity I need from AA9, and I don't have to- it meters like water. I have a safe load running 200gr XTP 1300+ from my 6" 610, I think that's already a bit fast for this bullet but it sure is accurate!

Anyone tried using a dipper with 800-X? Just cut a 10mm case down to hold the volume you need for the charge weight. I use one for Unique and get very consistent results.

All the Best,
D White

Had already purchased the 800-x, and yes, ya'll was dead right. Doesn't meter worth squat! The cornflake analogy was good. ;-)

I got the wife running the scale (she's a keeper!) and I was running the press. That way we had the time down to only 10 mins per round! OK, I'm exagerating! lol

Built a box of 50 and will put them on the chrono this Sat.

I'll post back here with specs.

(Anyone wanna buy a partially used bottle of...)

In supported chamber slide guns-
12.0gr of AA#7 behind a jacketed 180gr chrono's @ 1300fps from a 5" slide gun.

The combat tupperware's un-supported chamber renders the brass junk & induces enough harmonics into the frame that they won't pick up the next round.

Dipping is a bust as well (at least with my lee dippers and a homemade one I rigged up), you almost have to pack it in everytime to get it constant.

I'm using a Hornday powder measure, I did discover that while the rotor is up (filling with powder) a few light taps on the measure gets it to seat and dispense very well, but it gets old doing that for 400 rounds.

Luckily this past week I had only bought a pound, so I'm just going to run through that then its back to Longshot.

I use 800x under a 200 grn. WFNGC lead thumper scootin' along at 1375 fps. which is around 850 fpe. As others have mentioned it meters like buffalo chips. For this reason I only use it for this load cause it needs to be trickled. For range work Unique does well for me.

As always guys, more great info!

Think I'l try Longshot next

I think you will like Longshot much better than 800x. It meters better, it's accurate and you don't sacrifice velocity. It's a little cleaner than 800x but they are both shotgun powders so you know what that means...

Re the shotty powder, I don't load for those nor do I have one...please explain the "but they are both shotgun powders so you know what that means... ".

Longshot works well in the 10mm but I found it burns quite hot in the gun. You will notice the physical warmth after shooting a few rounds.

My normal load with long shot is 9.3 grns with a 180 grn JHP to 1.250 and a cci300 primer. Check that load though. It seems ok in my guns but it is quite warm temp wise.

I won't use longshot anymore because of it.

It meters like cornflakes. I have three Redding powder measures, two Hornady powder measures, and a Belding and Mull powder measure. None of them will meter 800X worth a darn.

It meters OK in my RCBS measure. Not as well as, say, H110, but well enough that I don't measure every charge.

After I discovered 800x, I pretty much abandoned other powders for 10mm. I found it to be the only way to hit the ~800 ft/lbs mark in a normal 5" gun without pressure issues. A 180 grainer at 1,400 FPS is my go-to load.
