Hey guys, I've been looking to try a couple different powders in 45-70 that have a bit better case fill than the H4198 I have been using, it shoots pretty accurately, kills deer well, but has an ES of 120fps over 5 shots. There's a whole lot of shake in the case with my load of 48.0gr, going 1950+/-60fps through my 1895GBL (18.5" barrel). My goal is good accuracy somewhere between 1800-2000fps.
There's a few powders that have caught my eye while looking in different reloading manuals(H322, Benchmark, N130, 3031 and 8208XBR) with me having 3031 and 8208 on hand.
I have a plan with 3031, but am curious about 8208. Has anybody tried it in 45-70? Think it's worth a good ol'college try?

It seems the lower power density powders are drying up and the single base are not far behind. I wander if the factory loadings are using a 5744 or a powder not sold in canister.

That, very likely, will be your Huckleberry. IMR4198 is a very good low- to medium velocity powder; if I was loading 300grn .45-70 for hunting, IMR3031 would be my first choice, and particularly with a shorter barrel.

I have a feeling that 3031 will end up being my huckleberry as well, was just thinking about trying a couple different powders. Hard to beat the "tried and true" powders!

I load for a few short-barreled rifles... I've had better luck with faster powders there. IMR3031 wound up being my go-to there, even with the big bores.

I have a 20" model 71 in .348WCF... originally I used a very slow powder, H4831, and it sounded like an artillery piece going off. I dropped down to IMR3031 and I got the same basic velocity, and better accuracy to boot. That instance changed the way I think about rifle powders.
