Ran some Federal Premium 3 inch magnum #4 Buck rounds through my 18 inch 870 Express yesterday and have the bruises to prove it.

The 2 3/4" standard load shells were a pleasure, I could have shot them all day, even the slugs were tolerable.

But those 3 inchers - oh boy did they ever kick.

Which is why I tell people that 2 3/4 is plenty for an HD gun.

Newton After growing up hunting with a 12ga fold a towel up and get between your shoulder and stock and that will releave most of the shoulder punishment, then keep that cheek on very lightly. Bring along a big dumd friend to help pattern. Do try different brands and 2/23"magnums as the powder load is the same just a few less shot. If your stock will allow you could slide a mercury recoil reducer in the butt of it to help too. Go to a appliance store to get refer boxes to shot at for targets. Have fun!

I have mentioned before my own experience firing 3.5" supermag shells. For those that have not had the opportunity to read those posts:

I had put a surefire rail forend on my 870 Express Super magnum. I put a basic vertical foregrip on the rail, since I didn't have any rail covers at the time.

I purchased a box of 3.5" super magnum shells, and two boxes of the lowest cost 2 3/4" shells I could find, to go to the range. Unfortunately, it turns out that I was so focused on the price of the ammo, I didn't notice that they were in fact, 20 gauge shells. So, I went to the range, with nothing but the 3.5" shells.

The recoil of the 3.5" supermag shells caused the vertical foregrip to break completely off the rail after less than 5 rounds.

Forget the towel, put tonight's steak between the shotgun and your shoulder. Talk about "love me tender!"

That's not surprising.

I put a cheap tasco on my slug gun just for giggles.
I shot it apart with 3 plain 2.75 slugs.

Every time I go to the range with my boss, I'll shoot off a few rounds out of his Ruger #1 in 458 WinMag.
For those of you who've never shot such a beast, it's about 3-3.5 times the recoil of a 30-06.

If you compare the 458 with a 3.5" 12ga, they have about the same recoil energy, but the 3.5" will hurt you more.
The recoil is much fast than that of the 458. I'd be surprised if you could attach anything to a 3.5" and have it survive.

A solid machined aluminum foregrip that I got as a replacement is holding up fine so far. Not that I really make it a habit of shooting 3.5" shells on a regular basis.
