870 defender project?

A few months ago, while walking through a lgs, I spotted this Remington 870 police magnum. By the marks on the barrel it was made in 1982. If this gun has ever been shot, it wasn't much. It is absolutely spottless. I added vintage furniture from ebay, it had the black plastic stuff, that I stripped and oiled with BLO. I then added a vickers sling, gg&g rear sling mount, elzetta front sling/flashlight mount, mesa tactical aluminum side saddle, oversized safety button, streamlight protac hl-x flashlight, s&j hardware improved carrier dog spring, s&j hardware 1million round mag spring and a s&j low drag no jam follower. The mag extension and forged extractor are factory. I absolutely love this gun. The feeling of quality on the older Remingtons is amazing. This gun lives very close to my bed!

There isn't much of anything I can think of to add/subtract on that shotgun and is my idea of the perfect 870 pump gun. very good taste.

Although, I'm pretty sure any of the police model 870's have the increased power carrier dog spring already. Nothing wrong with having a spare

Nice..
I like that.
Classy.
I've been in a combine day and night, so I inquired my LGS about accessories.
I never thought about ebay for a stock.

If you'll permit an outside entry, I'm going through this now with a Mossberg 500 I picked up recently. Older shotgun, owner passed. Wood stock was cracked through mounting hole. Pulled a barrel from a Maverick 88 I'd taken in trade years ago. I have the tool to correctly dress the barrel inbound. Shoots buckshot and rifled slugs like a dream, shorter overall than my 20 gauge youth model. Easy to mount a flashlight on the M lock. Kinda liking the patina, though...

Make it your own.

Have you finished it?

Pictures?
Oh no....not yet.
Our lives go on hold during our harvest season. We work 6½ days/week. We began September 24th, finished November 9th.

I am interested in cutting down one of the barrels to about 20" and soldering a new front sight on. I have done all kinds of welding and brazing and electrical soldering...but never soldered on a barrel.
I figure I can see it done on YouTube.
I rather like the old Cob style forend, but the toe of the stock is completely splintered off.

Oh I am sorely tempted by the 14 " rifle sighted barrels I saw on GB. One of those and a pistol grip could be Interesting.

I wonder how many laws that would break?

None if you file the right paperwork and pay the tax......oh, wait you live in Illinois. :(

You could just buy a Tac-14.

Once you cut it off, practice on the piece you cut off before attempting the barrel. Might save you some 'Oh cra@' moment.

The ground is bare at my place. Wasn't me.

You'd silver solder a sight, brazing could work too. For shoguns drill & tap is more common, and some of the rifle type front sights can be. Remington commonly swages ( I'd put a dot of super glue underneath to be sure) front beads in place recently, but that's only on ribbed barrels.

Low temp silver solder is my go-to for your stated purpose. Sights, Cutt's (ugh! But effective), aux ribs, I just don't put heat on doubles or o/us with soldered barrels or ribs.
I'm shooting a Beretta 686 Essential right now I added a second rib to the minute original and used 3M automotive trim tape. Did a plain barrel 870 for one of my high school trap students with the same stuff. Menards double sided isn't strong enough.
Two part epoxy is good, too. I had to redo a sight on a musket at the nationals to be legal so I filed the old blade off, hacksawed a slot in the base and epoxy'ed in a new "approved" blade. Was still there years later.
I'm about at 200 rounds through my defender. Police walnut, gummy pad, 21" Remchoke barrel with i.c. tube. Eight shot extension. Wish it was a pound lighter.

I had a Wingmaster with a 28" barrel.
Kept the wood stock, the weight helps mitigate recoil.
Bought a new 18" barrel. Added a streamlight rail mount that just screws on under the barrel nut. Added a light to the mount.
Added a M1 sling after adding doing mounts.
The best part, I can revert it back to the Wingmaster in about 3 minutes for hunting if I want to

Buy a new barrel or cut down to 18"-20".
Keep the wood stock.
Buy a bolt on light mount.

The real thing was less than $400 for black Friday shopping. I decided to indulge. I made the choice with the slightly shorter mag tube so I could fit a longer barrel occasionally for other uses if I wanted.

For PapaG.. wishing his defender was a pound lighter... ditch that mag extension then weigh it. The extra weight (and the balance issues that come with it...) is the reason I've never wanted a mag extension...

For all you folks up north getting the rough end of winter, just a bit early... Down here in paradise we haven't had a single cold front that mattered (and our first one of any consequence is still a week away..). Day temps low eighties for a few weeks now and one more week to go... Very unusual since most years we get a sharp cold front a week before Halloween. If, like me, a large part of your customers don't head south to our area until after winter bites... You can bet I like hearing about snow and all that goes with it... Heck, our summer time big tarpon are still around in the backcountry of the Everglades - not something you'd see normally... Just nothing like the 'glades..

Mine is a 870 Express 20ga. 18.5" barrel with 3" chamber. Mesa side saddle shell carrier, knoxx collapsing stock, synthetic fore end, and a +2 mag extension (Not Pictured). I need a light for it.

Yes
That is my thoughts as well. I already have a weapon light or two that could go on the msgpul mlok.
This gun has the toe of the stock chipped off.
Oh and two barrels...full and modified. I already have two more spares, so plenty of barrels. I do want decent sights. No optics.

Fiber optic sights are easier to use in low light than iron sights for me. I acquire them faster than most of my iron sights in any light. I shoot better groups from rifles using iron sights though (not comparing to scoped rifles here). Fastest is a fibre optic bead only, but I shoot them less accurately. For a yard shotgun, I would consider the last option in red. I use green for trap and like it. A sling is a good thing as soon as you are outside. A light can certainly be helpful, if only to identify the target properly before you shoot. I bought one for my .22 LR semi so it could be used when it's dark, but never got to install it! :)

I hate admitting that my 870 has been sitting since September waiting for me to decide how I want it to look.
I have waffled back and forth on furniture, mag extension, and light.
I am even debating sending it to Wilson Combat for a total high end build.
