870 finish

The finish on the receiver of an 870 has rubbed off to bare metal. Also in other spots on the receiver it is developing rust. I keep it oiled heavily but that doesn't seem to stop the rust. What should I do? I thought about painting it with duracoat or something because it is very humid in the south east and the bluing doesn't seem to stop the rust.

I believe a lot of these issues stem from the water rinse not getting all the bluing salts out of the matte finish. Oil is not a solvent for bluing salt. Wash it good with warm soapy water and then dry it good. If you want to paint it use a good automotive zinc chromate primer and then either flat or gloss black topcoat as you prefer. Or just oil it and see how it goes from there.

Typical oil is a very poor rust preventative.

Clean and apply two coats of Johnson's Paste Floor Wax.

Or spend some small amount of money and buy a Rig-Rag.
Then wipe it down after you use or handle it every time.

I was using clp to protect the finish.

Todays 'kinder gentler' carcinogen free CLP is not that great at rust protection either in my experience.

And some folks have sweat on their hands that will rust the chrome off a trailer hitch ball if they touch it.

RIG wipe downs, or several coats of Wax are your best low cost bets.

I'd add that the CLP/rust prevention formula; www.Froglube.com might help. It was T&Eed by a former SEAL/specwar operator.
It's not cheap but gets many + reviews. I just ordered a new 4oz CLP bottle.
Another idea would be a after market surface treatment like Robar NP3+, Black-T/Green T, Metalife, Bearcoat(Rocky Mountain Arms).

RIG (rust inhibiting grease) only needs a light coating, not even rain will cause rust. Used it on my hunting shotgun for decades.

Also I second the idea of johnsons paste wax. personally I've never used it on a firearm, but I own a professional wood shop , and have used it on my notoriously easy to rust cast iron surfaces for years (table saw, jointer, band saw etc), with no rust issues. I know a preservationist who uses Johnson past wax on antique museum weapons.

Should work like a charm.

Frog Lube, Hornady's One Shot, and WD-40 Specialist did very well with regards to preventing rust.

My grandfather got me started using Johnson's paste floor wax (still in the yellow and red can) on firearms over 50 years ago.

I still use it and it still works...

If you can find the old yellow can Simoniz car wax it works great on both the metal and the wood. It kept the car protected out in the weather for 6 months and lasts forever on guns. I've used it for about 50 years.

I durocoated mine, it was in terrible shape, I got it in a trade years ago. Took me a while to do it with an airbrush, but I finally got it completed.

Frog Lube. I have bare spots on one of my 870's, never have a rust issue after shooting in the rain.

+1 for the RIG rag. Eventually you can get a jar of RIG to replenish the rag, but it lasts a good long while before needing more.
