I’ve been upgrading my 20 year old 870 Express. I’ve had a Mesa Tactical side saddle on it for probably 15 years and no problems. I bought a metal Police trigger guard in gunbroker and the pins from the Mesa saddle are giving me real issues going through the trigger guard. I finally gave up and put the Express guard back in. Is there an issue with the saddles and the Police trigger guards? Can’t imagine there being one.

There shouldn't be an issue fitting the metal trigger guard in an Express receiver. Have you tried putting the regular Remington pins in to help align the trigger group first, then go to the Mesa pins?

Personally, I like the polymer trigger group better for guns that get used a lot, but the metal trigger group looks better up-close and for making an older Wingmaster or Police gun authentic. In an Express receiver, if it doesn't fit for whatever reason, I'd keep the polymer group in it and look for a nice used Wingmaster receiver that needs parts.

If you need an 870 expert to speak to, look up JD at AI&P Tactical. He always answers the phone,

I don’t know what I did with the original pins. I added the side saddle almost 20 years ago.

with the trigger assembly removed it will pull off easily be sure to save it in case you ever use the factory pins again

Also check to see if your shell latch has slid rearward. It will obscure the hole and the pin won't go through if so.
