I am tempted to get the 870 tactical with the extended tube, top rail and XS ghost ring sight and the extended ported choke tube. It is a wicked looking shotgun, but a little more expensive the Mossberg with the heat shield. I can get one for about $429 at an Ace hardware near my home. That is about $100 more than the Mossberg Tactical, which does not have all the extras like the 870. Is Remington still the standard for law enforcement? I have heard some departments are going with the Mossberg mainly because of the cost difference.

I'm a long time 870 fan. Like 50 years of nigh perfect use.

But, there's other good fighting shotguns including that Mossberg.

Get the one that feels best and add wear marks......

I have the 870 Tactical...great shotgun, very comfortable. Mine NIB cost about $550.

You take the most reliable shotgun ever (870) and modify it to a tactical design and you get the best tactical shotgun available.

Depending on what you're looking for, that particular model is well-configured and also well-priced. My only two quibbles with that configuration, out of the box, would be:

1. the regular recoil pad would be a good candidate for replacement with the pre-fit R3 Remington Supercell pad or the equivalent Limbsaver pad or a similar softer pad, and

2. personally (YMMV), I don't care for the breacher choke tube - I'd replace it with a flush-fit CYL or IMP CYL tube (should cost you as little as a dozen dollars or so, for a Carlson tube).

I bought the 870 over the mossberg 590A1.. I didnt plan on breaking down doors or be in any serious jungle warfare so the 870 tactical was a perfect home choice with the lighter barrel. I did add the knox spec ops recoil stock and shooting slugs out of it is a dream.

Hmmm, not sure all our US Marines would agree with that statement. Ever hear of a shotty called the Benelli M4?

Just my opinion, but the 870 Tactical is probably the least tactical of the 870 line. :D

A good 870HD with a Surefire fore end would cost just as much and probably be more effective.

IMO and YMMV but the best tactical HD gun remington makes is the 20ga youth model with 18 inch barrel lol its light quick and still hits with good force

im truthfully a mossberg guy anyway but you cant really go wrong with either a mossberg or a remington all you need truely is alot of practice with which ever one you pick

Hello friends and neighbors // Post #5 made me look over my shoulder

I put a full leather lace up recoil pad on mine because the rubber one provided grabbed my shirt...

I removed the breacher choke and replaced it with a MOD choke IMHO this is better for slugs and 00buck patterns YMMV.
Some folks say if you are shooting slugs your choke tube will end up down range but I have yet to see it.

I also found the forearm a little slick when shooting sitting or prone and cross checked the existing corn cob lines, a little spray plastic kote and it fit my needs.

I recommend checking for rebates until you have/need to buy, Remington has them all the time. Mine was $50.00 from Remington, $10.00 from the store and 12%off for a scratch on the mag tube.

After adding a five shell butt cuff, sling and flashlight holder my Remington 870 Express Tactical 12ga. with Ghost Ring Sights is as I like it, 1 0f 5 870s and the only one "gussied up" ,one thing about 870s you can certainly make them your own. At the gun show I found a 30" VR barrel, with large white double bead and chokes for a good price making it a tactical hunter.:D

The 870s are great and I do not mind setting this Express next to my Remington Model 31 or Wingmasters at all.

I hope this helps

Dimis// I know what you mean, my 20ga. 870 Express magnum with the 21" barrel, choke tubes and the 13" stock is perfect for all sizes. I like it for HD/SD/Truck and might throw it in a case to take dove hunting in a couple of months.

IIRC the 20 ga. 3" mag 00buck is pretty close to 2 3/4" 12ga. 00 in preformance.

Hello friends and neighbors // None of mine came drilled and tapped

But I only have the one Express Tac. the WMs and other EXPs were clean.

Around here (South of Charlotte N.C.) the gun smith charges $25.00 per hole to D&T.

A good bead is a fine sight, for my 1976 WM I have an 18 3/4" VR barrel with large brass bead, feels like home. The Talo looks good you might not even want the GR @ $100 later.

Hmmm, do you even know any Marines? I know quite a bit actually. And they would take a pump over an automatic any day of the week when you talk reliability. Thanks for chippin in though.

not to mention what your issued isnt your choice lol id take a pump over the semi too but its not up to me

My son-in-laws and I picked up two of the Remington Tacticals - very pleased with them. Two issues, both guns had sticky chambers that had to be polished/honed. Not sure if just rough or if a little of the 'tactical' coating ended up in there. And neither gun liked Winchester low brass (Walmart special) shotshells. Both guns run fine now and we like them. As an aside, I have the Bernelli M4. No comparison, but you can buy at least three Remington tacticals for the same price as the M4.

i am looking at buying an M4. Do they have a rifled barrel? or is it a smoothe bore? i would really like 1 but if its a slug gun only it would be even more impractical for me even though i have a few of those. But im on the verge of wrighting 1 big check to pay off my harley so money will be deplenished in my bank.

sleepyone... another great option to consider is the Mossberg 590A1 18.5" model. Put on a 1-shot extension and have 7 shots on tap. It has a true parkerized finish, not a crappy black oxide finish, and is a stone reliable fighting gun. I think they sell for around $450 or so. I prefer this to the 20" versions, as I find them to handle a little bit better, even though 1.5" doesn't sound like much.

If you're going with an 870, consider the Police models and you'll get a much better (more rust resistant) parkerized finish, machined steel extractor, slightly beefier carrier dog spring, and receive closer scrutiny to fit, finish, and polish. The Police models are made in a separate area of the Remington plant where a bit more attention is given them than the Express models.

If you get an Express (tactical) model and decide to refinish it to the better parkerized finish, you will spend more in the end than by buying a police model in the first place.

If you want a police model, get a great price from this LE distributor... she's the best in the business - tell her DHart sent you. Linda will treat you right and quote a price you won't want to pass up. This is a top shelf Remington LE distributor and Linda is a class act. (She's the boss).

I own both Remington and Mossberg shotguns. With regard to the Remington I own a Wingmaster and Express versions...if you are comparing the Express to the Mossberg, the Mossberg wins hands down. The Express and Wingmaster look similar, but there's a major difference in the quality of product. The wingmaster would be comparable to a Mossberg and personally I'd give an edge to the wingmaster as far as quality but with regard to functionality and reliability I would say that they would be equals.

I had a Mossberg 590 Marine Magnum and I have a Remington 870 Express Super Mag. I liked both shotguns but I needed one I could drop a new barrel in to hunt with. The only differences I found were as follows;

1) Location of the safety - Remmy has theirs in front of the trigger, Mossberg has theirs on the tang. I prefer the Remington setup but that's a personal preference thing. Pretty much all lefties will disagree with me.

2) My Mossberg's action jammed twice (in 6 years) and my Remington has never jammed (in 8 with more outdoor use). I consider both very reliable but the 870 has been just a tad better.
