The 870 would be easier to reload than a stock 1100. The 1100 has a small button on the lifter that you need to hit to get shells into the magazine tube. There's a bigger button on the Competition Master lifter that you can install in 5 minutes. With the 870, you just push the shell anywhere on the lifter.
870 also works better with really light loads. 1100s need at least a 1oz load to cycle reliably, especially if they get hot or dirty.
The 870 is also about $2-400 cheaper, depending.
That's about it. If you've got the 870 now, I wouldn't sell it to get an 1100. Work on recovering from recoil and not missing, and you'll do fine. That said, I do have an 1100 for 3 gun, and I love it very much.
The biggest advantage is the ammo an 870 will shoot. That being anything. 1100's, being semi-auto's, tend to be particular about what ammo they'll cycle with. The 11-87 is less picky due to a design change for this very reason.
It's a practical shooting competition like USPSA or IDPA except that it's run with a pistol, rifle and shotgun. Sometimes the stages are transitional and you shoot a bit with one before shooting another bit with the other. There's really no nationwide umbrella group for it yet, and it varies a lot from area to area.
