The effort needed varies, of course. Some people make no effort to obscure their online activities; some go to great lengths. Others quite proudly display their real information and make no distinction between their online and offline personas. That said, if you always think about everything being traced back to you at some point, you don't have to worry about it so much.

It sounds like the story mentioned involved much more than just a 922(r) violation. It would be interesting to hear more details about that as I suspect we are missing some vital information.
