In regards to quality of magazines for the Beretta 92FS, are there any aftermarket brands that have proven as good as the factory brands? Are there any aftermarket brands that should be avoided? Specifically, what are the reputations of PrMag and Mec-Gar?

Obviously, factory magazines are the preferred, but their on backorder at the moment. (Brownell's)

ProMags are ones I would avoid. ChekMate made some which were horrible (in their defense though they made them to the specs they were given at the time) but can be quickly IDed as they will be rough to the touch and made around 2001.

Mec Gar and Beretta are the ones I would go for, often Beretta sells them cheaper than anyone else if you sign up for their promos and wait a bit.

I don't know what you consider to be an acceptable price per mag but, on Beretta's site they're...
$29 for 1
$24.50ea for 2+
20% off $150+ and free shipping

so if you stick 7 15rnd mags in your cart, that comes out to $137.20 or $19.60ea before tax (if they charge it for your location.)
for me with tax it's $146.29/7 or $20.90/mag.

lube the outside of the mags then?
I dunno, i'm not a massive beretta shooter, but I've never noticed factory mags having drop free issues.

maybe I have stokholm syndrome since I'm an H&K fan and am used to spending more on mags. :D

MecGar was all I carried in Afghanistan. On a prior deployment, we had several problems with our Checkmate magazines.

Mec-Gar magazines are excellent, as has been stated.

Check Mate actually makes high quality magazines and currently makes many magazines for SIG Sauer pistols. The problem with the CheckMate magazines was due to the parkerized finish of the magazines, which was rough enough to attract and retain the fine sand of the Middle East inside the magazine bodies, causing the rounds to jam.

And yes, the US Army in its wisdom mandated that finish.

I would stay away from ProMag. I bought one ProMag magazine for a Beretta mini-Cougar since that pistol was out of production and the short magazines were hard to find. That magazine has repeatedly fallen out of the pistol during live fire.

I typically just buy factory Betetta mags since they can be found cheap from a number of sellers already mentioned.

Top gun has very regular and reasonable prices on their magazines. Great if you’re watching for Sig or HK mags.

Always heard good things about Mec gar too.

Mec-Gar, and only Mec-Gar. Specifically, the 18-rounders and the plus-2 20-rounders. Exceptional, totally reliable and the best on the market.

I staked my life on them; they're what I got for my last deployment.

Were you guys buying and carrying own guns when you deployed? I would have thought some officer would poop a brick over that.

that guy??? LOL

Just an FYI. He has only lost the USPSA Production Championship once in the last 7 years.
I could tell he was serious about competition, but, other than Jerry Miculek, I don't know any of the names in these shooting sports. (I also don't know any names in the NFL, either.)

Nope, issued M9s. Wasn't considered an unauthorized mod. You'd probably be surprised how many military folks prefer personally-procured gear over government issue (especially footwear), although I do still have my trusty old G-Shock I was issued back in the day.

Another vote for the Mec-Gar mags. I have some 15 rd, 18 rd and 20 rd mags from them, and they have been flawless. I have used gregcotellc.com for most of my mag purchases.

MecGar are what I buy whenever possible.

They are the OEM mags for lots of different pistols.

I remember the G-Shcok being quite popular back in "my day," although I've always preferred an analog display, so I always wore a Timex Expedition Indiglo. (These days I wear a Citizen Eco-Drive. Solar powered so no more batteries to mess with. Been going strong EDC for 3 years now.)

Promag is trash in any configuration , even the ones for the Ar15 . I use Mec-Gar and Beretta brand. Mec-Gar are very well priced and reliable !
Here's what I think of Promag .............

Magazines

Garbage

The usual first question is what are you going to use the magazines for,,,self-defense, range or competition?

For self-defense (I edc a 92) I use new factory magazines and would not hesitate to use Mec-Gar.

For range use I use military surplus magazines (Airtronic and Checkmate). I buy them really cheap and replace the magazine spring with Wolf 10% Extra Power. While I don't make it a habit to drop my magazines in the dirt or hard surfaces like concrete I see no reason to use my factory magazines.

I don't shoot IPDA but if I did I would use the already mention military surplus mags.

I am constantly on the hunt for more magazines. The good news is finding factory magazines for affordable prices is not difficult. At the moment I only have about 50 magazines three of which are no-name mags I brought during the Clinton years and they were all I could find at the time.

The no-name ones are junk that will go eventually go into the trash can (one already has). I don't feel comfortable selling them to someone else even though they work at the moment.

Most of my magazines are for 15 rounds. I guess I believe in using the magazines that are in the original capacity they were designed for.

I have some factory 17 round magazines. My Son-in-Law also owns a 92 (smart daughter) and I can't decide if it is a good thing or bad thing to give him the 17 rounds ones. :p It seems my kids rely on me for ammunition and magazines.
