I really want a Benelli M4 super 90. However they are pretty costly. I am not sure but the Mossberg 930 seems to be a solid platform and reliable. Can you guys give me some feedback on the two and help me decide. I would rent them out but there is no where around here to try them out. There is also no one I know that can let me borrow them either. Thanks for any help you can give. Side by side comparisons would be great as well.
Thanks everyone

I have the 930 SPX and LOVE it, it has been 100% reliable.

But you're comaring apples to oranges...

The Mossberg 930 SPX costs a litte more than a third of what the Benelli costs....

If I hit the lotto and had unlimited money, I would still have a tough time justifying the expense of the M4.

Are the M4's great guns?? ... Absolutely!!
Would I buy the M4 if the two guns were the same price?? ... Absolutely!!
Are they worth the $1200 - $1400 that they get for them?? ... not for my money...

The Mossberg will serve you well. I can't see spending that much on the Benelli that'll you loose in a shooting anyway.

Soo much more than a Mossberg

Be Careful.... These two quotes are showing your ignorrance and arrogance...

If the cost of the weapon was a direct relationship to it's durabiltiy and lethality, then I guess our soldiers would be using Purdys or Holland & Hollands...

Eagle, if you would post on how mossberg's are junk we might be able to understand your position. As of now, it seems like you just have an opinion with nothing to back it up.

Watch the look on the face of an 0311 when they get handed either a 500, a 1300 or a 870. Grunts is hard on stuff, 500 or 1300 can't hang. Mossberg has never built a decent semi, still don't.

Eagle1899,

Ive got over 14,000 rounds through two Mossberg 930's (1 walnut, 1 SPX) I have yet to have a single malfunction...

Have you even taken a look at a 930 or is your bias against Mossberg based on past experiences??? If there is something specifically that is inferior on the 930 when compared to, say, a Remington 1100. In my opinion when comparing an synthetic stocked 1100 to a synthetic stocked 930, the 930 wins hands down....

As to the OP poll, the M4 is an incredible weapon, and the 930 SPX is far from "junk".

It ain't about the stock. That comes off with a screwdriver.

And an 1100 is not an M4, either. I've got an 1100, too. Nobody's gonna die if I don't get a bird. It's a monument to what can be done cheaply with stamped parts. It works amazingly well. For what it is.

That doesn't mean I would't get a 930 to hunt with. But if I did have to trust my life to something, I'd listen to Eagle.

Are you planning on being deployed to a hostile country and will have to defend your life on multiple occasions per day with your shotgun?

Then get the Benelli.

Otherwise, save yourself $1k and get the Mossberg.

So the Mossberg is not as good if you have to use it? more than once?

My life is still worth more.

The Mossberg 930 never went through the military trials to be the next combat shotgun, so I don't know if it will hold up to the kind of use that a military unit will see. I seriously doubt you do either.

The Mossberg 590 however, did pass the military shotgun trials earlier, so I would have no problem using it or a 930 in protection of my life.

Mossberg has NOT been replaced....

Benelli is the autoloader of choice, Mossberg is the pump....

The whole Benelli deal has more to do with sales and marketing than reliability.... if you read the RFQ, the only gun that could have been submitted was the Benelli M4, the person that wrote the spec, wrote it "around" the M4. And the price is right up there, too. The Government isn't getting any bargains on them.

The Benellis won't shoot all of the 12 GA shells that the military uses.

There are still plenty of 870's in use by the military as well...

Many mossberg autoloaders will not feed the lighter loads, at all. They say they will, but many of them have had problems. Their parts and QC are through the floor from the ones I've seen come through my store. Other than the complaint of "they're too light for crazy magnum loads!" referring to Novas, I've not yet heard a complaint on any of the Benellis I've sold. Benelli is known for quality, durability, and making a product to meet the requirements set forth for it (so long as you choose the right product for your need, you'll never be disappointed). Mossberg is known for......a tang safety and different spot for a slide release. I've had shells fall out of magazine tubes with Mossys, just from simple recoil (I have 4 witnesses).

Plan accordingly. I knew that if it was my choice, I'd always choose the Benelli; indeed, I'm saving up for one at the moment. The thought of the M4 has crossed my mind, but it might not fit my personal needs. I'll buy what does, and like many customers I've sold them to, will probably be very happy with my purchase.

YMMV.

This made me LOL so hard hahahahahaha.

Anyway.

1: I Have shot bargain bin bird-shot, top of the line buckshot, steel bird-shot and 1oz slugs from my 930spx......i have yet to have a problem, even doing full 8 round bursts.

2: Have any of you even tried a 930spx?

3: Listen to Smitty, he uses his in 3 gun matches and in no way does he go easy on his guns.

4: Gee maybe the military uses the M4 because they didn't have 930spx's back then!!

5: If your gonna compare a mossberg 930spx to anything compare it to a FN SLP.
