Howdy, folks. During my trip to Wal-Mart, I noticed that the white boxes of Winchester ammo weren't just FMJ. I also noticed 115gr JHP's. Since it's pretty cheap and at Wal-Mart, would you/have you used this type of ammo for SD/HD?

I used to keep my 9mms loaded with it for HD. I still would, if I hadn't gotten a good deal on some Fed HST.

I never had any qualms about using it. It functioned fine in all of my guns, and I shot it quite well.

I've heard it's ok. I've used some at the range, but for HD I use Speer GD just for that little bit of added insurance.

I'm also curious about this... they say you should run a few hundred rounds of your intended SD ammo through your gun to test it before you decide to use it for SD, but a few hundred rounds of premium 9mm JHP ammo would be quite expensive...

In all the tests I've seen those rounds a part of, they performed well. The design is as modern as most other current production hollow points.

If I couldn't get my hands on ranger HPs, I wouldn't have any problem carrying those.

I feel pretty strongly that if one wants to be at all serious about a handgun one intends to use for SD, one should be pretty familiar with the performance of the handgun and ammo combination. I feel that a minimum for that kind of familiarity is 100 to 200 rounds of whichever ammunition one chooses.

There are three things one wants to ensure by shooting a large enough sample of the ammo to get an accurate idea of how it will perform.

1. Function. While this is more important with semi-auto due to complications of feeding, extraction, and ejection, revolvers can also be picky with ammunition. Make sure the ammo works reliably through your handgun.

2. Peformance. Does it group well with your gun? Are you getting sufficient velocities? Are you getting a huge muzzles flash due to the powders or barrel length?

3. Consistency. This is a larger concern with the lower end stuff as it seems to vary substantially from lot to lot. Is your POI the same from box to box? Do some lots feed better than others?

While it is pretty unlikely one will have to use a gun in defense and even less likely that a failure will choose that moment in time to occur, this is a pretty easy way to stay the deck in one's favor.

As far as cost, you need to figure out how much that peace of mind is worth to you. If cost if that much of a factor, you can always just buy one box of the cheapest stuff you can find and use that. It will probably go bang if you need it to and chances are highly in favor of you never needing to.

You're looking at 6, 7, and 44.

Agree. Although I can tell you I remember distinctly buying that 140 rounds of Cor-bon for the 226, I still have a pain in the wallet.

Best as I can tell looking through a magnifying glass, the 115gr USA JHP is the same as the 115gr Silvertip without the silver color and it seems to perform the same in all of the internet-posted tests that I have seen. Usually it costs HALF as much per 50 as Silvertips do. So I can afford 500 rounds.

I would feel fine using it in a home defense or the usual civilian torso to torso scenario. That being said, I only load it when I run out of 124gr +P Gold Dots. I think that a more modern design like Gold Dot will perform better under a wider range of scenarios.

I think the "silver tip" ammo is an aluminum jacketed bullet. Presumeably the aluminum is softer and would be expected to expand easier........not sure if that's been proven or not.

Sheldon, for sure the 9mm silvertip rounds no longer have aluminum jackets and haven't since the early 80s Changed to copper due to barrel fouling with the (relatively) high velocity round. In fact I think that all of the silvertip rounds have finally been converted to copper with the recent redesigns.

check if they have remington umc 115 jhp they're cheaper at my walmart.they are relativly hot chronoed just under 1200 fps,and functioned ok for me.maybe a little dirtier than wwwb.that said if they are accurate and reliable thats the important thing.

All I can say, is that with WWB jhps at $15 for a box of 50, and HST's being $19 for a box of 50... that choice is pretty clear.

And for cheap SHTF ammo, the Remington UMC 115-grain JHPs are $20 for 100.

In my mind, that makes the choice pretty easy. :)

...and I wanted a cheep helmet to protect my head when I drove a race car...NOT!!!

I am not too sure that SD ammo is where I want to try to make my budget's ends meet. :(

Which is why the cheap stuff is last-line stuff.

Federal HST is inexpensive enough to have a decent supply on hand for carry, but I dont have the $$$ to stock up it as SHTF ammo. The Remington and Winchester "cheap" ammo makes it easy on the pocketbook to keep a quantity on hand, just in case.

As for the helmet analogy... thet's make that a bit more accurate. A $10 helmet for a $10 head, but after a certain point, helmets stop being safer and the extra money is for comfort features... Forced air, aero, lightweight composites, etc.

:)
