9mm 1911 Help

My father has been head over heels, lately, for a 1911 9mm. I have no idea why but that's his thing right now. The problem is he wants something in 5" and $700 and under. Auto-Ordnance, Para-Ordnance, Llama, Star, etc. isn't a direction I want to steer him in. However I've recently discovered that RIA makes a few different 1911 GI style 9mm's. I was wondering if anyone could tell me anything about them or maybe steer me in a direction to look for another 1911 9mm that's quality and price controlled. Thanks guys.

RIA doesn't make any 9mm 1911s, much to my chagrin. They do make some .38 Super models, and those can be converted to 9mm by two or three different routes, all of which would probably get you there at under $700.

Well not RIA but Armscor in general. They make two different 1911 GI's.

The only company I could throw in the hat is Kimber, and that's not going to be under $700. From what I've seen RIA makes a quality product. Based on your price range I'd probably stick with them or a Para, but unless you get a REALLY good deal, the Para is probably going to be more than $700.

Thing about Armscor is that they seem to only import to America under other people's brands, so those models on their site, which I've drooled over many a time, aren't available stateside. None of their importers has picked up a 9mm 1911 yet, unfortunately.

I think the closest you're going to get to your dollar amount would be a SA Loaded, at least in a dedicated 9mm. M1911 pistol. The RIA gun I worked on for a friend of mine was very nicely put together, with fit and function being more than acceptable. Time and usage will tell the tale if the components are durable and reliable enough to last. I've seen a few RIA in Super .38 for around $499, but then you will have to buy a 9mm. barrel assembly, some spare magazines, and possibly another recoil spring. For best accuracy results, you should have the barrel, barrel link, and bushing fitted to the gun and that's going to cost you some with a visit to your local gunsmith. Probably run you a little over $700 when everything is done. Might also want to consider an adjustable rear sight for the different point of impact for the two different calibers.

Do what I did and buy a used one. I searched for about six months to find a good quality one but have been really happy.

A used one is no problem, the problem is that we live in NJ and his pistol purchase permit is only good for another two months. If we don't use it he pretty much will never be able to get another one because. . . well that's just how NJ is.

Springfield makes some, but the cheapest are right under $800 IIRC.
