9mm 1911 ,who would want one ?

.45 has that special feel
Is the above a tip of your hand, so to speak?

If so, and if you’re serious about a .355/.356, you may want to ponder the only other 1911 chambering that bears J. Browning’s & Colt’s fingerprints, the 38 Auto - aka, the 38 Super.

I will never forget picking up my very first 38 Super nor the comment made by the old head behind the counter as he opened the parcel … muttering to himself, he said: “Oh, what have we here? Ahh, a Colt Government & it’s chambered for the only other round the 1911 was originally designed for, the 38 Super”!

Of course, if your special feel to it comment was devoid of sentiment, nostagia or history, then by all means, get a Georg Luger-chambered 1911!

ME, if it's the Combat Commander! 👍

That looks good!

anybody else getting bored of fancy wood??
Lately I have. Ive gone back to plain old USGI plastic with most of the 1911's I have, simply because their texture is more aggressive and they fill my hand better.

This is the 9mm Colt Commander I picked up a couple of years back. Supposedly an Israeli police trade in that was reimported, by Century according to the stamp. It has a series 80 (blued steel) serial number, but wasn't cut for the Series 80 firing pin safety. It looks like it had some rust on the slide in a couple of places at some point and the slide and frame were redone in satin nickel. The small parts are all still blued. At some point, someone replaced the grip safety with what looks like a Wilson drop in beavertail, and some for funky flat scaloped MSH. Numrich hooked me up and I replaced them with proper, original factory parts in satin nickel.

My favorite wood grips in the past were S&A's "full checkered mahogany". Not real fancy, but fully checkered with aggressive checkering and they had some swell through the palm that filled my hand better.

I just dont get enough aggressive texture from most of the 1911 wood grips. They also tend to be a tad skinny to my liking too. I need the texture and swell or the gun wants to move around in my hands.

This is my old Colt Commander in 45 that's wearing a set of the S&A grips.

It too started out as a pretty Colt blue gun. Unfortunately, Colt (and most other) blue and my sweat don't get along, and the first summer I was carrying it, it had some pretty bad rust on it (and in most of the same places as the 9mm above) and I had to have it hard chromed. They hard chromed everything but the barrel on it. That, and kydex holsters fixed it right up, and I carried it daily for another 10 years or so with little rust trouble.

Hence the " I might" comment. And the comment finding project. All opinions are interesting. I have copies of 1892 winchesters in .357 and 44 mag. I have a 45 colt version. Never was a Winchester in any of those back in the day. There are 4 cyl mustangs. I have a modern rifle in 45-70 called 1895. But thank you for permission !!! But I don't let strangers impress me like that man behind the counter did you.

Oh, or should I say, Oooh ... I missed that "I might" comment, but not because I was unimpressed

Good luck with your decision ... can't go wrong with a 1911 :)

This is my SA Ronin EMP 4" (next to my SA Hellcat). I bought it because a). I own to other full size Ronins and b). because it is basically a shrunk down 1911 specifically built for the 9mm. It's a great daily carry piece and a very good shooter. Ronin Hellcat range time.jpg
Every 1911 I own is in .45 until recently. I ventured down the 9mm 1911 rabbit hole with a Colt Competition for range time. Darn fine weapon and she runs well. .45 21 bucks plus a box vs 11 bucks a box for range fodder is a no brainer for todays market...

I might. It's something I've never tried. All the handguns I've tried, bought, kept or sold to get something else never did I think I'd consider a 9mm 1911. 45 has that special feel. 9mm ? Everyone's friendly comments , reasons and ideas are welcome. I would think there's plenty.
I love 1911 pistols, I have 38 super, 45acp and 9mm, the 9mm is cheaper to shoot less recoil and my wife's favorite. I shoot the 9mm more than the others because of having more 9mm ammo

Not on my list, but if someone offers me one....as noted, a steel frame dampens recoil nicely. Get a 38 Super barrel and magazine and you can fire that underappreciated round.

That's what happens when you can't talk face to face. Which would be awesome but no clubs or what ever around here. Thanks

While the 1911, particularly in its original configuration, remains my first love and favorite handgun, I've strangely never had the desire to obtain one in 9mm.

Don't know why, but the 1911 for me is gonna be primarily in .45 ACP. Not gonna say never, but I don't have the need for a 9mm 1911 nor the inclination.

But for those that like this venerable design in 9mm, at least you enjoy the 1911, would rather see folks owning/shooting 'em in 9mm instead of not having a 1911 at all...

I do love the 1911 in .38 Super though, for no explicable reason.

Well, for one thing it makes a cheaper understudy for a .38 Super 1911. I fitted an extra 9x19 barrel to my RIA 1911A1 and it has worked out just fine for me.

I love mine. For awhile I tried to find a springfield EMP 4", but I wasn't willing to shell out the cash without seeing one in person. I liked the idea that it was trimmed down a bit for carry. Eventually I gave up on that and picked up a Tisa B9 Carry. I want to checker the front strap and put a bobtail mainspring housing on it, but right out of the box it is one of my favorite guns to shoot. I also have a full size double stack 1911 in .22tcm that I bought a 9mm barrel for and just need to get a recoil spring for it.

This past December, my neurosurgeon said no more shooting pistols over 9mm. So my 1911 (AMT Hardballer) and Star M45, both in 45 Auto, are gifted to immediate family. I still want to have a 1911a1 with a mil-spec profile. So I'm looking closely at a 5" Garrison. Any other suggestions?

Have a friend who really loves his 9mm 1911, but he does not put a lot of rounds downrange.
I owned two Springfield EMPs when they came out, maybe 10-15 years ago?
Liked them but didn't love them, and they went to new homes.
Guess I never "got" the 9mm 1911. I have owned dozens of .45 acp 1911s and still own several .45acp (and one 10mm) 1911s.
I am getting older and at some point, I may need to move to 9mm 1911s.
When that happens, perhaps I will, but more likely, I will download my handloads a bit and stick with .45acp 1911s.

I shot many matches with my 45 1911s over the years. I don't have a 9mm 1911 but have shot them. The steel gun and weight do make shooting 9mm easy as far as recoil goes. But I'll stick with shooting my several steel CZs for my 9mm shooting. Just got a CZ SP01 Shadow. Haven't even shot it yet.

Pretty sure I like my 1911's in 45 ACP. There was a time, maybe 1988, that I had a Smith & Wesson Model 39. It was a minty example. I handloaded for it. It got taken in a burglary that year. Maybe it's time to replace it. At that time it was a rather inexpensive handgun, maybe $250. Nowdays the wood grips would sell for that much!

38 super is cool and all but expensive holes in paper. Back in the bowling pin days. (Is that still around) our 45's were so slow and easy shooting the lead bullets could bounce back to your feet. That was cheep shooting. I don't know what is changed so cheep target ammo will cycle a stout heavier gun. A convertible black hawk only got mag loads till I went double action. Do head stamps really mater if you like the gun. Just noise after all. You don't hear complaints about M1 Garand in .308. 45 colt rifle ? Not realistic at all. But popular. Look alike 22LR are everywhere. ⁹I have two coffee cans of 9mm brass. Too many small primers stashed back. Just processed over 40 lbs of stick on wheel weights that can be anything I want with some tin. I saw an import 1911 on buds that is a replica of a WW2 1911 but shoots 9mm. Zero reviews. I don't know but might be a nice new project. ,cheep project if it cycles good. If not then even a 50% loss on trading isnt a killer. Or stick to speed loader practice this spring. I caused so many good pictures and stories. Many fine weapons.

I love’em just like I love my .45 ACP 1911s. This is my Dan Wesson Specialist Commander. With plain ball ammo, I’m able to hit 11”x13” steel at 100 yards half the time. My STI (pre-Staccato) Marauder is my competition companion.

There is no right or wrong cartridge in a certain gun as long as it’s reliable, accurate and dangerous to the object the muzzle is pointed at.

I must be the unlucky one here. I’ve had four 1911 9 MM. Three Springfield and one Kimber. Not one was able to feed and eject reliably. I will never buy a 1911 of any kind that isn’t a 45.
