Hi Folks,

I'm pretty new to this site, and so far I love reading all these informative threads.

The next hand gun on my list is a 9mm. Other than that, I have no idea what I want. I would like to hear everyone opinion and advice about their favorite 9mm platform and why, and what would you recommend to a close friend.

If it helps at all, this is what I have currently:

Walther P99 (40)
HK USP (40)
PPK/S (380)

I am open to any and all suggestions...

Well, since you already own a Walther, I know the P99 in 9mm is very well liked. Like you I own mine in .40 S&W

Depending on what you will use this gun for and what your price range is there are a lot of goo guns out there.

I'd look at the Sig Sauer P226, the S&W M&P, and the XD in 9MM.

The P226 and M&P are two that I really like. Both would qualify for duty carry, protection of home and family and range guns.

I'm sure you'll get a lot of advice to go with Glock. There are many Glock fanatic here. If you're on a budget I suppose they would do, but make sure no matter what you buy to shoot the top three you are interested in. See shich is more comfortable for you, which you are more accurate with, and which suits your needs.

This is an open ended question.
Your purpose for getting another 9 mm so important.
If you do not have any special purpose, that you may choose whatever you want.

In the DA/SA catagory: AR-24
Great bang for the buck. Everything in a CZ 75B plus
  1. Forged Frame as well as forged slide.
  2. Grip inset further on the backstrap - makes for incredible ergonomics.
  3. Firing pin safety spring relaxes when trigger is pressed instead of compress - makes for a better trigger.
  4. Firing pin stop is the 1911 type instead of the roll pin type - You can dry fire without breaking a roll pin.

In the striker catagory: M&P
  1. Great ergonomics.
  2. Parent company is in USA.
  3. Great reputation for reliability.
  4. Will be able to find more and more assessories in the future.

In the concealable catagory: P7 PSP or M8
  1. One of the best CCW designs ever.
  2. Flat, narrow.
  3. Very accurate - non-movable barrel.
  4. Great trigger, because it is always single action.
  5. Extremely safe - cocker prevents many AD's.
  6. Extremely reliable.

In the absolute fun of it catagory: Full size 1911
  1. Heavy platform for a 9mm means very low recoil, and a lot of range fun.
  2. Very accurate platform.
  3. One of the best triggers of any platform.
  4. Great reliability.
  5. Wonderful ergonomics.

My next handgun will be a 9MMx 19
I like the CZ 75B with DA -or- SA Cocked & Locked option,
All steel materials, both of which may expand your
handgunning experience 16 + 1 mag, and a trigger that
can be worked on to approach the 1911 SA. Reputation
for reliability and accuracy some atribute to the slide
inside the fraem design, grip similiar to a Browning HiPower
which fits me. and the Kadet .22 LR conv. kit also makes
it a nice platform.

9mm - I'll probably find a 147 gr. load sub-sonic for SD/HD
alternate to my .45s & Model 60 .38 Spcl +P

pd02,

My endless chant is to find what fits your hand and points naturally for you and you'll be happiest with a handgun in that family.

If you are already having good accuracy with the P99 or USP then you might want to go with a 9mm in one of them.

If you're not as accurate with either as you think you should be handle a number of different handguns and find the ones that point naturally for you. It may be a CZ 75 or a 1911 or a Glock, but you'll find a grip angle and reach to trigger that feels natural to you and then you can play within that type of autoloader.

Enjoy.

CZ75 is my favorite 9mm platform. I have a fullsize, compact, and a P01, all shoot great and are 100% reliable. My Sig 239 is also very accurate. I guess I like all my 9mm, have fun picking one:D

Cz 75b

You just can't beat the balance of the CZ 75B. I picked one up on a proxybid auction and just wasn't sure what I was getting as I had never shot one before. The one I won for $300 is in like new condition, its the two tone version and is really a nice looking gun and fits my hand perfect. The gun is very accurate and well made...solid...no plastic. I have many 9mm's and this one is quickly becoming my favorite.

Thanks for the info everyone.

Just to clarify, this will be mostly a range gun.

The BHP has always been a dream of mine...do they still make them?

My $.02

IMHO in the 9mm platform Glock makes the best pistols. 17/19/26/34 you can't go wrong.

In .40 it's HK or Sig and in .45 it's a 1911 style.

.357/.44 Special & mag in a Ruger or S&W Revolver.

Thanks Dobe, and everyone else.

Are the new BHP's the same model/quality as older ones?

In other words, should I look for a used one for any other reason than price savings?

I always try to buy older S&W revolvers, because I like the quality and craftsmanship better. I also prefer the older Ruger MKII over the new MKIII. Just my personal preference.

I know nothing about the BHP's though, so have there been any modifications (improvements or not) in brand new models that I should know about?

Thanks,
PD02

You might consider the Browning BDM (Pistol or Revolver Mode)...Extremely slim, 15 shot mag, and feels good in hand...

i always the proven glock 19, and i have and love 2 xd's if i was in teh market for a 9mm i would get another service model this time in
9mm!

I'm with you on the older Smiths. I collect those. My favorite will always be the 19-3, but I have a nice 17-3, and 18-4 that I'm fond of.

The newer Brownings have cast frames. Most will tell you that cast frames are quiet good, and present no problems. That is probably true. If you are a purest, you may wish to check out the following places where you can find one of the older BHP's. Be aware that some of the older BHP's had a convex feed ramp. Mine wouldn't feed anything that remotely looked like an expanding bullet.

Do a search on BHP and Stephen A. Camp. He is an authority on the BHP.

If you know what you are looking for, you can generally find a pretty good deal at one of these sites. I've picked up a decent Smith revolver or two from these sites...a real nice 25-5 comes to mind.

If you just want a 9mm to have a 9mm the field is wide open -- too many good choices.

OTOH, if you want a 9mm for cheaper practice than one of your current .40S&W guns, the Walther P99 in 9mm or HK USP9 would seem logical.

Since you seem to like plastic, I'd look at the S&W M&P and Springfield XD9 if you just want a 9mm. Since S&W is currently running a $50 rebate and two free magazines promotion, its likely the best bang for the buck thru April.

If you are looking for a polymer gun, I like the XD.

If you are looking for a 1911 look, I like the EMP.

If you are looking for CCW, THe Kahr MK9 is nice.

kahr

PM9 all the way liter than any of the above guns mentioned and smaller also and not cheap, but neither is life. Mine goes bang every time and has so far for 9800 rounds. All guns mentioned IMO are also excellent guns, and as one can see, not everyone agrees on which is the best ccw to carry either. Different strokes for different folks:)
