I'm now running low on my CCI 500 primers but my local stores all have plenty of CCI 550 primers ,
I have been using AA#5 powder and still have 5 pounds left , with HS-6 and autocomp to be easily had as they are plentiful at local stores, so question is which of the 3 powders will be best suited for the CCI 550's ?
or will all 3 work well , loading 124gr coated @ 1050ish "punching paper target loads"
CZ 75 , CZ P07 , HK vp9 , CZ P01

The magnum primers might be hard enough not to work in some guns with light firing pin hits. The only way to know if any of your guns are going to have a problem is to try them. Can you buy a sleeve of 100 to try them out?

yes i can buy a sleeve , back when I loaded for 40s&w "have sold the firearm'" I used HS 6 and did use magnum powders and for me HS 6 did much better with magnum primers but that was a different caliber and different pistol
I believe 40 and 9 run similar pressures
figured I would ask if anyone used CCI 550 in 9mm with aa#5 or hs6 or autocomp

For what it’s worth, I run HS-6 or Longshot with CCI SRPs all day long in my stock Glocks. Usually medium to hot loads. Might be similar to SPM?

i have used CCI magnum primers with HS-6 and it worked very well. Accuracy was one of the better I tested....so all in all pleased with the results.
I was looking for velocity and using 124 gr RMR hollow point bullets if that is helpful.

I was given 1000 by my son-in-law, so decided to use them in several of my H&K firearms, Using BE 86 and range brass no issues at all..

Primer substitutions has become a hot topic on reloading forums lately, mainly due to the trouble finding primers we have been using. I've had no problems with primer substitutions, but with every component change, a new load work up is done (good for me cuz I like reloading!) Here's a bunch of info; https://duckduckgo.com/?q=using+magnum+primers+in+"standard"+small+primer+applications&atb=v314-1&t=chromentp&ia=web
Only problem I had was with a Taurus .32H&R with a light Wolff spring kit. The trigger geometry on the Taurus small frame is kinda not exactly "right" for a 6-shot cylinder. It's nice for a 5-shot - none of my 85's had problems with trigger pull - but when they installed the 6-shot pawl they messed something up and the 731 has a terrible trigger from the factory. The Wolff kit makes a sweet shooter but I have to use standard primers - not a big deal at all w/ .32Mag. I tried magnum and small rifle primers with my striker-fired Springfield XDm .40 and didn't have any issues. Supposedly, some of the smaller ultra-carry type pistols w/ strikers have a problem but it's about the gun, not the primer.

I would try whatever your favorite load was previously, then just back it off by .01gr and call it a day.
CCI 550s all were ignited just fine by the lighter firing pin strikes of striker fired Glocks and a Kahr K9.

thanks everyone for their inputs , I normally load on the mild side for target rounds Im going to give a try and compare

I’ve used magnum primers in some of my 9x19 and 45 ACP loads when standard primers were not available.

I experience no problems but do some work on working up loads in case the the magnum primers might over pressure the loads.

W296 is a favorite powder for me for top loads in several cartridges. It is recommended that magnum primers be used with W296 so I like to keep some magnum primers on hand.

I’ve been reloading long enough that I have learned how to weather shortages. I keep an adequate supply of primers on hand to get me through the shortages.
