9mm bullets - round nose FMJ vs Truncated Cone FMJ

I am prepping for the next season of USPSA.

I shoot a Glock 17 with a factory barrel in Production. My current load is 3.3gr TiteGroup, with a 147gr Precision Delta FMJ-RN, which is running about 127 PF.

I'm preparing to order 6k bullets or so, but just found out PD is out of the FMJ-RN until the end of March, but they do have FMJ-TC in stock.

What are the pros and cons of a TC over a RN? I'm pretty happy with the RN load I have now, but I also want to have my reloading for the season done by the end of March. Should I just be patient?

I prefer TC to RN, but then I prefer SWC to TC.
I certainly wouldn't buy 6k without testing them.
Maybe you can find 100 similar TCs locally?

I don't shoot competition but the fp's I've loaded 'whack' informal shooting steel discs with better results over the rn's I've loaded.
I'm wondering if a good deal of this is due to the contact around the edge of the disc myself.

Owen: A little close on the PF?

The PD fmj has a normal ogive. This PD TC won't really have an ogive. It will be straight to where the cone starts and then straight to the FP.

I have a tight chambered CZ, so conical and flat point bullets have to loaded pretty short in my gun; but with your Glock it should be fine, but you may have to shorten your current oal.

Easy for me to say, but I'd wait for the known good performers, or order the minimum to try them out.

yeah, it's real close on the PF. I chrono'd on a 50 degree day, so as long as its warmer, I should be ok.

Hey owen, If I'm not mistaken you can order just 1K. Somewhere during check-out there was a note to add $5? for a 1K order. You can even order a sample size, 100, if you want. I don't know if they have them listed online yet but they also have hollow points in 9mm.

Give em a call, they have answered pretty quick every time I've called.

I have a similar problem with my favorites---Zero 125gr JHP. They rotate production to just one or two types of bullets for months at a time. I have waited for 6 mos once.

Zero may be the second cheapest for your 147---I haven't checked. . My 125gr JHP Zeros are cheaper to the door than MG 124 JHPs.

You don't have to change the internal case volume. In fact you can increase it a bit, if you have enough freebore. And you probably do with the GLOCK.

The truncated cone is a much more efficient bullet for transferring energy to a person or animal and feeds as well as the round nose. It has been gaining favor with the bulls eye shooters. You might want to take a look at the Hornady HP-XTP. This is a very accurate bullet and solves the desire for a bullet that will do it all.

For my application, I really don't care about transferring energy to anything but a piece of cardboard or steel. I care about two things, decent accuracy, and dirt cheap cost.

The XTP fails on the cost point.

You should be looking at cast lead bullets, moly-kote bullets from Precision or Black Bullets International, plated bullets, or very large orders of jacketed bullets from Precision Delta, Roze Distributor, or Montana Gold.

Cast lead is out, as are the black bullets: I'm shooting a Glock with a factory barrel. The black bullets lead like crazy for me.

I haven't looked at Roze, but PD is significantly less expensive than MG.

I said case volume. Pressure/velocity are affected by internal case volume and distance off the rifling. Who cares if the OAL is different?
