not sure about FMJ penetration but 147gr speer gold dots at 50 yards I fired two shots at a whitetail doe did pretty good. one passed all the way through the back bone and lodged just underneath the hide on the opposite side, about 8 inches of penetration through bone and muscle. the second was a through and through which entered just above the eye(one of the hardest points on most skulls) and exited just below the ear on the opposite side. considering self defense ranges and no bone I would say 10-12 inches easily.
If you are looking for penetration get some 147gr (or heavier) hardcast flat nose bullets. I saw them tested once and they easily out penetrated the FMJs on soft tissue. Safari hunters will often use a heavy flat nose bullet because of their impressive penetration, the flat nose makes a bullet resist yaw and applies it's energy in a linear fashion.
