I'm looking for a well made and reliable 9mm and want to spend less than $600. In today's market what makes and models should I be looking at?

Everyone's going to have different options but my list would include:

Home defense/range: Sig Sauer SP2022, Beretta M9, S&W M&P, CZ 75B

Carry: I'm really looking at getting the S&W Shield, if I ever see one. The Ruger SR9c is also a good option for carry and with the extended magazine it becomes a full size grip.

Glock 17/19/26 depending on the size that you want
in addition to the ones mentioned above.

I had a S&W 5906 years ago - great DA/SA option if you can find one.

I like your list. But, switch the CZ75 up front!

I pick up my NIB Shield 9mm this Friday. I'm counting the minutes.

Forum wouldn't let me quote for some reason.

Both the S&W Shield and Ruger SR9c are hard to find right now, I did manage to find a S&W M&P 9c, its pretty close in size to the SR9c.

Don't forget the Beretta Nano. Very nice carry 9mm.

S&W M&Ps still going for $500 and less online. Feel really good in the hand.
A relative, who probably never even fired a rubber band gun before, got a XD and took to it like chocolate.
If it fits your hand, get one.

Not for CCW...but I LOVE my P95DC. Rock solid and easy to enjoy. I wouldn't use it for carry, but it's comfortable at the range.

My next 9mm is a G19.

At that price range, for a 9mm, your choices are pretty wide open. Some of it depends on what your primary use will be, as a gun perfect for concealed carry may not be particularly pleasant to shoot, and may not have what you want in a home defense gun. I can't say that any of the suggestions thus far have been off base, and I think you would be fine with any one of them.

For my money, I really like the XD line. I hae owned and/or shot extensively a wide variety of 9mm pistols, and the XD is about the best gun for me that I have ever shot. I also enjoy the SR line from Ruger. If you like the Beretta 92, consider a Taurus 99, which I feel is a great gun that can usually be found much cheaper than the Berettas can. The usual complaints about Taurus don't really apply to the 92/99 line. The old Ruger P89 might be a low cost choice as well, though you will have to buy used to find one. Still, they come in at about half your budget, and while lots of people find them ugly, they are typically about as reliable as you can get. All of these suggestions run well under (in come cases as much as $250 or so) your budget, which gives you money for ammo and a holster.

As far as Glocks go, I really like them, but at the end of the day, they bite my hand. If it weren't for that, I would likely recommend a Glock, to be honest. But, handguns are a personal thing. The CZ, for instance, is a gun that I have just never been able to warm up to. No doubt, they are good guns and a lot of people love them, but for one reason or the other, they have just never done anything for me. But thats personal preference and not anything that can be substantiate.

If it were carry, my thoughts run in exactly three directions when it comes to autoloaders: SR9c, Shield and Glock G26. Having shot all three of these (and having carried a G26 for awhile), I can say I like the all. Of the three, I actually think the Shield is the best choice. With that being said, I prefer to carry a revolver for CCW, so keep take my opinion with a grain of salt.

We have: Glock 17, 19 and 26. Browning BHP. Ruger SR9 and SR9c. I'd suggest one of the Rugers or Glocks.
