Hey guys I started to do 9mm 124gr plated today and in my Hornady book and Lyman manual I have no listing for hp-38. Lyman doesn't list it for any weight and neither does Hornady. So now I have a lbs of powder I have no listing for

http://www.hodgdonreloading.com/data/pistol

Following the steps for 9mm, 124 gr bullet, hp-38 yields a result of:

Starting charge weight: 3.9 grs
Max charge weight: 4.4 grs
COL: 1.150

Make sure you look at the data from the page itself, and that it's appropriate for your load. Don't trust what I've posted here... always check load information yourself. :)

HP38 is essentially W231, if you contact Hodgdon they will tell you so. You should be able to safely use
W231 data with HP38. Also, use cast bullet data for either plated or coated bullets and you'll be ok. I myself
load W231 with both plated and Hi-Tek coated bullets...and Blue Dot, and Power Pistol, and Longshot, etc.
PS- Phlier is correct in saying never take anyone's answer, even mine :)
Always find published data, either online or in your manuals.

I keep forgetting I can use hodgdons data. sorry about that guys. I thought oh crap i grabbed the wrong powder when i seen no listing.

so with it not being in 2 known manuals would it be safe to say this isn't a good powder for that caliber?

You didn't say which 124 gr. RN, or FN? RN is usually recommended at 1.150" COAL. FN is usually recommended at 1.060" COAL.

My favorite load with 38/231 is 4.3 gr at 1.130 oal with the RMR rn plated bullet. As always YMMV.

It is listed in the Lyman manual under 125 gr JHP. Also, according to Xtreme you can load them up to 1200 FPS so you can load using jacketed data with HP-38.

Lyman 49th?? Must have missed it.

Even before HP-38 and W231 became one powder, they were good for 9mm. ;)

Now that they are the same exact powder, it is a great powder for 9mm.

I just loaded 600 rounds of the RMR 124 gr. plated with 4.2 gr. HP-38. Data comes from Hodgon website using the 124 gr. BERB HBRN TP, Berry's, Hollow Base Round Nose, Thick Plated.

Not being funny is that really what that means? I seen that on hodgdon and said what the heck is that!?!

It is coming up on the end of the year and Hodgdon's annual printed magazine of load data will be on the shelves soon, if not already. I believe it has a section that describes the projectile abbreviations that Hodgdon uses in their data, if memory serves me correctly. I usually find one each year at the local Kroger's grocery store.

Not the be all to end all, but it usually has some nice articles around reloading and all the data that can be retrieved on the web site that was current at the time of the printing.

+1. Yes, BERB = Berry's Bullet and I have used Hodgdon's BERB plated load data for other brand plated bullets with good results.

thanks guys. im itching to get off work and load some and see what happens.

I have been using 5.4gn of HS-6 @ 1.16 for plain lead. Is that pretty close to what you loaded to?
That is an awfully light load. You must be getting a lot of unburnt powder with such low pressures. When I load a 124/125gr lead bullet in the 9mm I charge 6.2gr HS-6 w/magnum primer and that's even a little light.

It may be, It functions great however although I did have 1 light primer strike that I attribute to not fully seating the primer. Fired when I fed it back into the gun. Recoil was about on par with WWB and I only noticed "smoke" on 1-2 out of the 80 I fired yesterday.

Amen.

Published data only. Nobody on this board knows for sure whether any of us are a 59 year old forensic engineer or a 19 year old sociopath just trying to get someone to blow themselves up.
