I'm looking to start reloading for a 9mm,would one of these powder be better for a NEW person to start with: AA#5 or Win 231? Some thing thats clean burning + NOT supper hot , Ideals?

I really like W231. It has good metering properties, and don't ask me why but my old eyes can see it better when I am inspecting my cases.:what:

231 is a good goto powder, if you can find it. It's pretty scarce down here. I've been using AA #5 for 9mm for a while. It meters well and shoots soft. It's a relatively fast powder and not really meant for anything hot.

I use Win 231 (also sold as HP-38) for .380/9mm/45ACP, works just fine and meters well. I only reload for target plinking and like having just the one powder to deal with.

I really like Win231 as the go-to powder for several pistol calibers, including 9mm. It's a moderately fast speed, it shoots clean, can be loaded lightly without mishap, meters well, gives good case fill, and is generally available at a number of local stores under Win 231 or Hodgdon HP-38.

There are better single-caliber powders, but it's going to be hard to beat as a "1 can fits several" powder.

Unique is my favorite 9mm powder. Easy to find, and works great. Sorry didn't see your listing between the two. I still say give Unique a try.

I like both W231 and AA#5.

I'm currently using AA#5 in all my 9mm loads because it meters so well and I can use it for all bullet weights and easily make power factor for IDPA.

The other nice thing is that it is a higher volume powder so there is not so much air in the case like some lower volume powders like Titegroup.

My Wilson CQB Elite 9mm 5" 1911 likes:

5.0 for 147gr jacketed - 897-900 fps ~132PF
6.0 for 124-130gr jacketed - 1078 fps ~ 134PF
6.5 for 115gr jacketed - 1165 fps ~ 134PF

1.13 to 1.14 OAL. SD and ES are VERY low with AA#5 very consistent.

I haven't worked up a 231 load yet, simply because AA#5 is working so well.

231 is a great powder too though, so whatever you can get will work great for you.

Regards,
James

Maybe because W231's surface is really shiny and reflects light well? :D

Big +1 for W231/HP38 (If you can't find either, try Green Dot as poor man's W231/HP38 - meters well, powder charges similar with mild/medium recoil).

FYI, I just posted a comprehensive pistol powder burn characteristics comparison on this thread - http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?p=6611499#post6611499

Enjoy!

I've used a lot of 231 in the 9mm, but you will have to watch carefully for double charges. I get particularly good results with light loads using Lead bullets.

great thread "3leggeddog",

I too have been wondering the same thing. I just setup my Dillon 550 for 9mm and I picked up 250 berry's 124gr RN bullets and 250 124gn HP bullets to try. I have always been a big fan of WW231 for my .45ACP and am glad to hear it works well for the 9mm.

Does anyone know what a good starting powder charge is for these bullets??

Like WSF, Longshot, Power Pistol powder in the 9mm. They meter well. Generally give very good accuracy in a wider range of powder charges. Compared to some of the quicker burning powders used in the 9mm.
