I just bought a used p89 for cheap and have some questions.

9mm Luger ammo is 9x19 right? I only ask this because I was looking at ammo on one of the various websites and there were several different types of 9mm ammo, being that I'm still getting acquainted with 9mm, I figured this would be a good first question.

If you were to carry a 9mm as a sidearm while hog hunting, in an area where hogs and coyotes are known to walk up on you while you're trying to disassemble a feeder, what ammo would has the best stopping power. I'm not saying this will go all the time, because usually it's the GP100 on the hip while in the pasture.

Where can I find a factory manual for a p89? I searched on Gunbroker and couldn't find one and I don't particularly care for ebay, but searching there I couldn't find one either. Are there websites that sell that type of thing, or at least a takedown manual.

Off the subject, is .357 sig ammo specifically for the sig semi-autos? Or will it fire in any .357? I'm assuming that it's sig specific, but still pretty new to handguns and the various ammos' available.

That's all I can think of right now, sorry for the noob questions, but I feel like I need to know.

Yes

I would go with a 147 grain round for the application you mention, though if hogs are involved I'd stick with the .357 in the 158 to 180 grain weights.

Here: The first link is for the P89DC (decocker), the second link is for the P89 w/ manual safety

Yes. .357 Sig and .357 Mag are not interchangable

Good gun by the way, I like all my Ruger P series.

possum, the links Striker gave are good and I also think you can write to Ruger and they will sent you one of the booklets for a particular gun.

"9mm ammo" is one of the most confusing terms out there because there is a whole variety of cartridges with "9mm" in the designation.

Typically though, "9mm" usually refers to 9x19mm. 9x19mm is also known as 9mm Luger, 9mm Parabellum and 9mm NATO. These are all the same.

The slightly smaller 9x18mm round is used in the Makarov pistol (and a few others) and is also known as 9mm Makarov. It is NOT interchangable with 9x19mm.

In Europe, the .380 ACP round can also be known as 9x17mm, 9mm Short or 9mm Corto. Obviously, these don't interchange with 9x19mm.

The .357 Sig round is a cartridge designed for automatic pistols. It will work in any pistol chambered for .357 Sig, not just guns actually manufatured by Sig. It is NOT the same as the .357 Magnum load cartridge used in revolvers and is NOT interchangable.

There are other brands makes, and models of pistols such as Glock 31,32,33 that can use the .357 SIG round. The SIG moniker is like Winchester or Remington specific cartridge when a type of round is marketed. It does not have to fit only SIG SAUER brand pistols.

However, as stated already the .357 SIG is not interchangeable with the .357 magnum of revolver guise. The idea was to have .357 magnum performance from a pistol instead of a revolver. The cartridge does that very well and in a smaller more efficient package than the revolver.

The .357 magnum revolver though is more versatile in the type of ammo used. This is true for bullet type, weight, and power factor and for different applications.

Two excellent rounds for your purposes would be the Winchester Ranger 127gr +P+, or Federal's standard pressure Classic 115gr #9BP hollowpoint. Other rounds that I've been impressed with are Remington's Golden Saber and Cor-Bon, both offered in various weights and pressures.

Best, Jon

Ruger's website has them for free download. Or, for that matter, call Ruger. They'll mail you one.

.357 Sig is a cartridge developed by Sig (surprise). It is a bottlenecked cartridge, and is not interchangeable with .357 Magnum.
