9mm starline Brass; dont use in S&W Shield?

I have long though Starline the class of the brass-making world, and their responses to this thread only heighten my opinion of them.

Flummoxed I am. Sounds like a defective barrel/chamber rather than systemic with all Shield barrels. Starline's link in post #25 seems an example.

But Wilson is certainly better equipped than most to ferret out a bad barrel/chamber but doesn't seem to indicate that in this case.

So, flummoxed I am! Just can't fathom how you can get a bulged case out of a fully supported, not defective, chamber. Has to be defective or unsupported.

Not that you can believe everything on the internet but I did find this.
My Shield barrel looks nothing like the one posted on the SW Forum.

If there is a problem using your brass in this gun, then what about all the factory ammo produced with you brass and other manufacturers that you make brass for in the 9mm??

Also as your brass is considered some of , if not the best then what about other brass manufacturers Wouldn't their brass suffer worse bulging??

I realize it is hard for you to determine as you stated not have a gun or barrel to do the testing yourself. As mentioned, I will load some max loads this weekend and when I have a chance get to the range(It's under water) Not that I can prove anything beyond a doubt.

To me, the apparent variability of this problem again suggests that this may be a pre-mature unlocking issue, rather than chamber support per se. That early unlocking problem was variable across 9mm M&P's, IIRC. Perhaps S&W is down that same path again on the Shield? If so, that's disappointing.

Federal brass was being used in the link that I posted and some of the samples that Wilson sent me were Winchester and showed the bulge as well. It is apparently not limited to just our brass, but our brass is the only brand that concerns me. Factory ammo made with our brass should have no problem for first firing, it is subsequent reloadings that will overwork the brass in the bulged area that will cause concern. And as far as I know the problem may only exist in guns with barrels that were made on a Friday. Hopefully this problem is only limited to a few guns, but only time will tell.

Rule3, call me back Tuesday and let me know what you find out!

OK/I like that "made on Friday" perhaps only those that Fred made, he has a drinking problem:D;)

I have some Hornady+P LEO use only factory ammo. I have fired a bunch of those testing the SW Shield. I will dig through the brass and find them. They are Nickle.I also will test my loads but as I mentioned the range is a swamp right now.

Maybe S&W fixed this issue and quietly changed barrels during later production? Stranger things have happened....

My Glock 17 doesnt bulge brass, even heavy loads of mine and Hornady Critical Duty LEO .
+P rounds.....never a bulged case....Say Starline, I notice you also have +P brass, how does it differ weight wise from your standard brass and do you have the same warning with it and the Shield? I really wanted one of those things!

Our 9mm brass and 9mm+P brass both carry the recommendation. There is no difference between our 9mm and 9mm+P cases. They are both capable of handling +P pressures in suitable firearms. Keep in mind that this is just a recommendation.

Understood. I'll hold up until the smoke clears...I assume no such warning for the .40 S&W brass?

I don't have a dog in this fight but would like to thank you Starline for showing up and participating in this.

I have long been a customer since back in the one page G&A ad days. I cannot say that I don't have and use other cases, but I keep my best loads in yours.

Again thanks for taking the time.

Now if you ever decide to make up some M1 Carbine brass, I will be a happy camper. :D:D Oh and it's for my Ruger Blackhawk, just so you know it's for a handgun...
