Looking at picking up a bulgarian makarov. Have noticed ammoman.com has 9x18 cases of wolf for 139.00 and free SH. Anyone else have better prices than that? Just want a good place to buy wolf for practice.

As the thread title says, what do you use in your mak for self defense ammo.(and where do you get it from) ((If you reload, what kind of bullet do you use))

Look for some Hornady HP. There are still Corbon HP's out there, but you gotta keep looking. The old standby Barnaul 95gr. HP, but I guess they are in short supply also.

I use Cor-Bon JHP but they discontinued it a few years back. I bought up a bunch of it. Gel tests showed it to be about the best you could get. Maybe they'll make it again one day.

Brown Bear 92g FMJ would be good. I was thinking the Hornadys would be good, but after plugging a rabbit at about 7yds and not having an exit wound, I changed my mind. All the wet phonebook tests said it should have gone through the critter, but in use it didn't. Hit him right in the heart and he didn't even twitch though. Good rabbit bullet................

Barnaul 95 (?) grain in the blue box.

Ideal? Probably not, but its awful reliable for me so far.

Mak SD Ammo?

My vote goes to the 115 gr Silver Bear. Got mine from AIM surplus for about $ 105/1000 rds and you can likley find it similiarly priced online elsewhere.

So, its cheap enough to practice ALOT with, feeds reliably in my Bulgy Mak and various test results on the web indicate good expansion with reasonable penetration. Not ideal, but as good as expected from a beefy .380 type round.

If you're a reloader you can buy Hornady 95g XTPs and push them to 1050fps with no unusual case bulging. I've chrono'd Brown Bear 115g JPH at about 1000fps, and I'd assume the Silver Bears are the same, but you can't buy 9.2mm 115g JHPs as components as far as I've been able to determine. Even if you could buy the bullets, you might not be able to get that kind of velocity out of a brass case.

Some are against the idea of carrying handloads for self defense. But if you check each primer for proper seating depth, use a good powder measure, visually check each case for the (approximately) proper powder charge, and verify that your crimping style will prevent bullet setback during firing, I doubt that you'll get any more reliable ammunition from a factory.

That is good news. I have an 82 coming in today hopefully. The only JHPs I have around are an old box of Fiochis from when I had a Mak a few years ago.

Are the Brown Bear 115s as good as the Silver Bear 115s? I assume the only difference is the case?
