I'm seriously considering doing something I'd thought that I'd never do - buy an AR-15.

I'll have the house paid off this month. IKE missed us and the proceeds from the sale of a '76 Winchester relic bailed my last lay-away gun out. This gives me the excuse to celebrate by using what would have been my house payment money to buy something different.

I was thinking about maybe a basic a-2 model. I prefer the longer barrel and sight radius, and I don't need a collapsible buttstock 'cause I don't wear body armor - I just look like I do. ;)

Any suggestions?

what do you mean by a A2 clone? if you are talking about a M16A2 clone, all you need an AR-15 (rifle-lenght) with a A2 upper and a A2 buttstock

how much you want to spend? $600-$1600? and another thing, what are you going to use the rifle for? because if you want to mount a scope, i would recommend a A4 (flat-top) upper and get a detachable carry handle with A-2 sights, that way you can have the A-2 sights and use Scopes for long-range shooting or varmint hunting.

detachable carry handle

good options

if your looking at a budget.

century is currently pushing an A2 type rifle.

but Del-Ton makes a very good rifle kit high quality, low price

I second getting an A4 with detachable carry handle for the A2 look. You can add optics later by removing the carry handle.

Other improvements would be a two stage trigger such as one from Rock River Arms. A free floating hand guard will help achieve accuracy that can be equal to the best factory bolt action rifles.

The "left-over" cash totals $853.00. I'm looking at getting the best basic a-2 clone that I can for plinking, comparison to the other rifles, as an example to my sculptor buddies (I provided most of the reference material for this sculpture, for example.), and general fun. I figure that I can get a better-performing upper later, politicians permitting.

Depending upon your skill (and it doesn't take much), you can always build one. For $600-$700, you can put together exactly what you want and you can truly call it your own.

I may try that. I've built muzzle-loaders from incomplete kits, this should be do-able.

-And there's a gun show on the eleventh of next month. That would give me an excuse to go. Otherwise, it would get a little difficult to get a good receiver down here on the border. Local dealers won't carry or transfer stuff like that if they can avoid it.

Building an AR is incredibly easy. just put the parts into the lower, and most of the uppers come pre-assembled. even those that dont are a quick build with the right tools

You mention a cash amount of a little over $800. You can find quite a few models in that price range. I paid $799 for my 20 inch Bushmaster with removable handle and the same for my DPMS A4 copy with the removable handle. There are several other companies out there selling in the same price point.

I went and did it.
There was a gun show today and one dealer had a few unbuilt lower receivers. So I dropped $120.00, filled out the little form, and walked away with a receiver from Superior Arms of Wapello, Iowa.
The heart of my first EBR that I shall build from the parts of other rifles, much like Frankenstein's monster!

(Evil, cackling laughter.)

Ahem.

Oh, I also bought a switchblade, for old time's sake.
