A thread here prompted me to post an article I had saved giving a breakdown of the 2nd Amendment and its wording. All gun owners/2A supporters should read this and share the link far and wide, especially to anti-gun types to drop some logic on them.

A Breakdown of the 2nd Amendment

We only have 3 rights in this country: Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. All the rights listed in the constitution fall somewhere within those three. Gun ownership covers them all.

It's a great article. The only flaw I find within it is the word "use". The Second Amendment does not cover the use of arms. The word "bear" does not mean "use" unless it is used in a context such as "bear up" arms. Only "keep" and "bear" are immune to infringement. There is nothing to prevent law prohibiting the use of arms such as in a downtown area unless in self defense.

Good input. High username to thread relevance :D

Moreover, it is important to point out that a government might be able to create security in a state by some other means, but this is the manner in which security is preserved in a FREE state.

This is deep!

The erosion of Liberty took a quantum leep forward after both the civil war and WWII

I like that you did not tie arms directly to guns. The 2A does not say firearms, it says arms. That would have been swords, flintlocks, and cannon in the day, but today includes a fair bit more and surely will include more types of arms in the future. All the current regulations on pepper spray, tazers, etc are pretty anti-2A.

Great article. I do not have the advantage of an education---but that does not make me illiterate---and I have always interpreted the Second Amendment exactly as the author has.

Excellent article.

It is funny (sad) that 1 sentence with 27 letters and the words: "...right of the people to keep and bear arms..." can be misconstrued and ignored by so many folks.

My response to those that claim the phrase "the people" in the 2nd amendment refers to the state is to ask them this question:

These phrases: "right of the people peaceably to assemble," "right of the people to be secure in their homes," "enumerations herein of certain rights shall not be construed to disparage others retained by the people," and "The powers not delegated herein are reserved to the states respectively, and to the people" all refer to individuals, but "the right of the people to keep and bear arms" refers to the state...?

The response is usually an emotional irrational straw man argument.

Soldier415, excellent point.

The 2nd Amendment does not substitute the words "militia", "state", and "people" to mean the same thing.
