Good news - I am ready to add to my growing collection

Bad news- I dont have much of an idea of what I want.

Let me disclose what I already have in my handgun collection :

SigP220 .45
Kimber Classic Custom .45
Springfield GI .45
Makarov 9x18

Recent guns I've shot :

I shot a friends Baretta 92 9mm last weekend and didnt care for it much.

I shot a range instructors Springfield XD .45 Compact that I did really like, I hit good with it also.

I have been thinking about getting a 9mm lately scince I have three .45's already. On the other hand I sure did like the XD 45 Compact I shot, it was one of the few times I've ever picked up a gun for the first time and shot well with it. I'd also like to either give the Mak to my wife or retire it altogether. Does Springfield make a 9mm similar in size , and if so what is the general opinion of them? Im sure I'll think of more questions, but I've got to get back to work. I'm also willing to look at any other guns comparable to them. Thanks in advance.

Are you asking if Springfield makes a 9mm similar in size to the Makarov, or are you asking how the XD Compact compares in size? The XD in any caliber will be double stack, whereas the Mak's single stack and thinner overall. Springfield also makes the new EMP, which is a micro-sized 9mm 1911. Not cheap, though.

The reviews of the XD platform overall have been very favorable. The fact that you have shot one and shot it well is a big plus. Check out www.xdtalk.com for more feedback from XD owners.

Well to start off I own a XD45compact, I love it and it is a next to perfect carry weapon. That being said you have a few .45's so I would suggest a maybe looking into a 9mm. They are fun to shoot and will be much cheaper/ unless you already reload for your .45's then its a wash.
Springfield makes the XD9 and XD9sc, or if you love the 1911 platform you could go with the SA EMP or a Fullsize 9mm 1911, although they may be a little hard to find and also run you a serious chunk of change. The other options for 9mm you may enjoy would be the CZ75 series, which would not be nearly as pricey. Anyway I hope that helps.
Good Luck and Be Safe!

There you go.

Springfield Enhanced Micro Pistol in 9mm might do it for you. It's new, I don't know much about them other than they're small.

High Planes Drifter

I have two XD .45's one Tactical and one Service model. Great guns! Since you own a lot of .45's [I do too-- I also have a Taurus 24/7 .45acp] I would suggest the next purchase be a 9mm. I had bought a 9mm recently and the ammo prices allow me to shoot it more often. Although Springfield makes a great .45, [the XD is one of most accurate polymer's I have shot] I think the SW-MP is a better 9mm. The MP which I acquired recently is the most comfortable I have ever shot. The interchangeable grip backstraps are really nice. It has a higher Mag capacity [17] then the XD and has turned out to be one of my best gun purchases. The MP goes for 499 here in Omaha which is about the same as an XD. I am so impressed by the MP my next .45 will be an MP.:) I hope this helps!

The Best to you and Yours!

Frank

Sorry for the botched up OP, what I meant to ask was if Springfield made a 9mm similar in size to the .45 compact XD. If they do, is the gun capable of decent accuracy and is it overall reliable?

Sort of, No SA does not make a XD like the .45 Compact in 9mm, but they make the full size and a sub-compact the full size is 4" barrel and the sub is a 3" barrel with a chopped grip like the .45 Compact. I think that they should make a compact 9mm, that is a 4" barrel with the chopped grip, but I am not sure that they will. The 4" barrel makes it a full size but it would conceal like a sub-compact that is why the XD45compact is so perfect, at least for me. You could look at a S&W M&P9, the grips are a bit smaller than a XD9, or you could also try the new Taurus 24/7compact, they should be real cool, but you can't be a gun snob and you have to be ok with buying a inexpensive quality firearm, that some will say is junk.
Good Luck and hope this helps.

I looked at a Springfield Compact today, and I think that is the way I will go. Price was 535.00.

XD 4 me . . .

I have been a proud owner of an XD 40 Tactical for 4+ years until today. I have put a few thousand rounds through the gun with only one jam, and that was with snake shotshells in South Texas shooting at a 7foot rattlesnake. I traded the XD40 for an XD45 Tactical this weekend, and I love it even more. Getcha one, or heck, 2 or 3!!
