A good .22mag for low $

I have a 10/22 that i've spent a good deal of money on and now I'd like to get a .22mag to shoot with. Mostly paper, but some groundhogs and maybe squirrels.

I also have a Rough Rider .22lr/.22mag revolver that I've used for squirrel.

Just looking for some suggestions on a good, under $250, .22mag. I'm not really thinking of anything but the price. I'd like something from a reputable company in case I need service. Bolt action/lever action/semi-auto(?) is not really an issue. Just want to hear some opinions on something good in a .22mag.

The Marlin bolt actions sound like what you're looking for.

I have a Marlin 25MN that regularly shoots just over 1 MOA. Got it for under $150. A scope pushed the total cost to right at $200, including sales tax.

When using CCI Maxi hp's, it's murder in squirrels. Make sure that for any squirrel hunting you do, you use flat point ammo.

I bought a Marlin stainless .22 mag with Williams fire sights for $188 at Wal
Mart. It's a good accurate rifle for the money.

Savage 93

I have a Savage 93GL (southpaw) .22 Mag bolt action. It's accurate but the trigger could use some work (the Marlins will probably share this "feature").

MSRP on this gun is $182. Savage also makes it in stainless steel with a synthetic stock for $252.

It is my most accurate rifle, and at about $125 brand new, it's a pretty darn good deal...

By the way, if you do happen to get one, I've found that they like to eat Winchester "Super-X" ammo, the 40 gr JHPs...

My vote is for the Marlin 25NM. Mine shoots <1 MOA with Winchester hollowpoints and is one mean squirrel rifle. Only complaint is that the trigger is quite hard and takes a bit of effort to manage. I have had much more expensive 22 mags but they have left and the Marlin has stayed. A very accurate and practical rifle.

Good suggestions, but don't forget to keep your eyes open for a used gun, too. I found a CZ American WMR on the used rack for $285 and I'd be surprised if it'd been fired 20 times from the looks of the bolt and mag follower. No box, papers or swivels, but otherwise like new.

Gotta put my vote in for the Marlin as well. My 882SS is a tack driver and the synthetic/stainless makes it really durable for hauling around anywhere you go.

keep your eyes open for a mossberg..havent been made in a very long time.the receiver is grooved for a scope,they have the regular sights too.i believe the barrel is 24 inches.they take a detachable magazine that holds 4 shots.the mags are expensive to replace(around 20 bucks).i think..its the 640k model with "chuckster" inscribed on the barrel.best 22 mag bolt gun i EVER had.seen them here and there running around 150 bucks.

The Savage 93 has a standard 5/8" grooved receiver, like most American current .22s.

I went to the local shop last night and almost walked out with the Savage. It was going for $219. I found a Marlin used at $189. I think I'm going to look around some though. Especailly after some of the prices you all are saying you see. I'm sure I can find the same things a little cheaper.

I did not look at NEF, but I do like the way they look. I'll have to give them some looking also.

My NEF shot 0.3 inch groups at 50 yards right out of the box. I was using that winchester ammo I mentioned before, and a 3-9X40 Bushnell "Banner" scope. If I were a better shot I bet I could cut that down to 1/4 inch or maybe even less. The gun shoots better than I do...

It isn't quite as good at 100 yards as it is at 50, but it is still sub-MOA...
