A Good Folder Knife

OP - seriously go handle various knives. I have a strong Spyderco bias so I'd consider either the Native or the Delica both of which are available with options like upgraded materials, or the "base model" will do fine. I like the Endura personally if I could just have one knife ever, but its blade is over 3" bit a good margin (closer to 4).

a few suggestions.....

Lockbacks with a pocket clip:

Spyderco Delica
Spyderco Caly
Spyderco Native
Spyderco Persistance
Any Spyderco other than these that happens to meet your criteria.

Benchmade Mini Griptilian

Buck Vantage Pro/Avid/Select

Kershaw Chive
Kershaw Leek
Kershaw Needs Work
Kershaw Skyline

Lockbacks with no pocket clip:

Buck 55
Buck 503
Buck 112 (really more of a belt knife to me)
Case Trapper Lock
Case Russlock

Slipjoints:

Most any of your commonly seen Case knives. Trappers, Mini Trappers, Stockmans, Sodbusters, etc. (I prefer Trapper patterns myself, but there is no right answer here really)

These are just some of the examples that I know of and am familiar enough with to recommend to others.

Good luck.

And for what it's worth, Buck and Spyderco Customer Service is outstanding. Quality knives backed by good folks.

M-Tech makes a variety of folders for very fair price. Quality is amazing!
i'm not trying to be rude, but was this meant as a joke? i won an M-Tech (shooting pool) and threw it away after i determined it was of such poor quality that it was unsafe to use. maybe mine was a fluke, maybe they've changed, i dunno. i DO know the M-Tech i had was nothing short of knife shaped garbage (honestly).

OP - the most bang for your buck is probably going to be Kershaw. i've owned a few and, not only are they great knife, their customer service is awesome. Benchmade is always a good option, but pricier than Kershaw. i don't have much experience with Spyderco, but friends are happy with theirs. (putting my flame suit on) check out Cold Steel, while you're at it. Chinese, but pretty solid.

Chalk me up for another "+1" on the CRKT recommendation. I've carried an M21-04G for over a year now and it's an excellent knife, although a tad big for some folks. I just ordered it's smaller brother, the M21-02G. They're fantastic knives for someone who wants a TOUGH knife that'll hold a superb edge with minimal sharpening, and the G10 scales are nearly indestructible. I have a couple of SOG Flash II's that are very good knives too, but I've found I like the M21's better and they're just as fast to deploy as the spring assisted SOG's.

My daily carry is a Benchmade Mini-Griptillian. 3" blade. great locking system.

I have come to really like the Opinel Brand as the Quality is good and the price is right.
My daily carry is an Opinel#10 in a belt type flashlight holder.
Carbon steel and RAZOR sharp.
Case Sodbuster Jr's are an exceptional value and can be had for less than $25.00.

A Benchmade Mini Barrage has been my EDC for the last year and I really like it. Snappy assisted-opening, great grip, outstanding blade, and legendary Benchmade quality and customer support!

My daily carry is a Benchmade Mini-Griptillian. 3" blade. great locking system.

Same here for the last couple years, it had become my every day no matter what folder and all the rest are currently in a dusty pile. Mine has a plain edge, give it a few strokes and it's right back to nasty sharp. If I reach for it and find it's not clipped inside my pocket I almost panic. Slim profile easy to carry easy to forget.

Spyderco makes some great knives but I prefer the Benchmade construction.

+1 on the Opinel.

cheap in money, not in quality.

EKA, too. 3x the price though....

Both look civil and timeless compared to modern makers designs

That is what i like most about them. Plus an opinel carbon blade
or Sandvik blades are hard to beat for the money.

Has anyone used the Buck Model 55?

I haven't used it, but I've handled several recently.

They're essentially smaller versions of the 110. Obviously lighter and more pocket "friendly" with a good solid feel. The locks all had a nice solid snap indicating good attention to quality in that area. Of the half dozen I looked at a couple of them had grinds that were slightly off just a bit, but the others looked fine. One of them had the blade slightly off-center.

I'd suggest looking at a handful of them and picking the one with the best fit and finish and grind.

I am very happy with my Victorinox Adventurer (Swiss Army Knife or SAK) for my daily carry. There are other models that are similar, but I like the lock feature which makes it handy for me. It is a simple knife with a minimum amount of tools on it, so it is thinner than the Trailmaster (edit-oops) mentioned above, but still is large enough for your hand to safely exert some pressure on what you are cutting if necessary.

The newish SAK Dual Pro X is an interesting knife. It is thicker than the Adventurer (more layers in SAK speak) with a regular blade, a saw blade, and a serrated blade for speciality purposes. The only thing I don't like about it other than it is thicker than I normally like to carry in my pocket is that it does not have the tooth pick or tweezers.

I used to dismiss SAK's as "boy scout knives". But for a day to day tool, they are fantastic and fairly inexpensive. If you damage a blade like I do from time to time, you can replace the knife without killing your wallet.

I also very much like the SOG Twitch II and Twitch XL models for carry. The Twitch II is small for you pocket with a clip but fast to deploy and stays sharp. The Twitch XL is a fairly new addition to my carry rotation. I always have the SAK, but often have a second blade on me.

The Mini-Griptlian is another one that I like. The new folding Razel fascinates me also and I'll probably buy one. I have the Ringed Razel which is a fixed blade and never really got used to the size and edges for daily carry. I guess I'm a glutant for pain as I'm probably going to get the folder and try it out. Who knows if I'll like it?

The Spyderco Native is an excellent daily carry knife. Walmart used to carry them and were priced in the $35-$40 area. Most of the Spyderco knives are very good. I have a couple Endura's that I use for work knives, but have been known to carry the fully serrated version clipped to a back pocket. It is the only fully serrated knife I own. I like the the size of the Delica, but have never bought one. I want to look at some of the newer ones that are similar.

The SOG Mini-Vulcan is another knife that is useful. It is a bit thicker than the Twitch knives, but is so easy to open one-handed if that is something that you like. It is also a very tough medium sized pocket knife with blade that is very sharp from the factory and easy to maintain with a diamond sharpener.

Looked up the Swiss Adventurer, sharp looking knife. Basic difference in the Adventurer and the Trailmaster is the wood saw. I like that feature because when I am in the woods or on the farm, I'm always looking for a nice walking stick (hobby making and finishing them). The Swiss knives are really great and have some very usable features. I am always needing a screw driver and the tooth-pick is one of the handiest ideas they ever incorporated. Guess if I had to pick one knife solely for function - it would be my Victorinox.

You might like the One Handed Trekker as it has the saw blade, tweezers and tooth pick. It has the larger regular blade and the longer saw blade. I have the camo version which I am not thrilled about camo as it just means I'm more apt to loose it outdoors as I'm forever sitting a knife on the ground. Smoky Mt Knife Works sells these. Just make sure it does not have the serrrated blade unless you like that.

There is always the Farmer as well.

I'll +1 for Kershaw.

I have a Blur and a R.A.M. and I would easily recommend either. Both are made in the USA and both hold an edge very well. Both can be had with or without serrations, and as someone else already posted, Kershaw will sharpen them for free if you mail them your knife!

PRM: Smoky Mt Knife works actually sells a non-serrated version. It may in fact be one of their special offerings from Vic since I assume they are a huge buyer of their product. I bought it "in person" there during one of my East Tennessee business runs to the area.

Added: I was there during one of their manufacturer's rep days a month or so ago and the Vic guy actually built a SAK Spartan for me on the spot for free. I thought that was kind of cool. However, they would not vary the tools.... only would do the Spartan for free. That is when I bought the Dual Pro X. I also got to meet the builder of the SOG Revolver knives which was cool. He gave me his cell phone # and everything. Yes, I own one of the early ones which has a very nice sheath with it versus the current one offered.
