i recently started gunsmithing and i love it, however barrels seem to be the hardest part because i cannot make them for i do not have the tools or the material. however i found a good cheap source of barrels! :) i am going to be building a .22 LR rifle soon for hunting turkeys and rabbits, it shall have a 24 inch barrel and will have some good quality homemade sights on it. i will be making the gun for firing Aguila super Colibris so i can have a nearly silent .22 rifle for when i don't want to spook game, however it will be capable of firing standard .22 LR ammunition as well. i will be making the stock out of American white oak, and i am considering making it either break action or maybe it will have a breech that will swing up like the blade on one of those paper cutter thingies. the trigger and hammer will be steel, the firing pin may be attached to the hammer but i have not decided yet. i will give it a half cock position, and i am not sure about the mainspring yet. i might go with a coil spring in a tube because i have not yet found a source of suitable leaf springs. it would have to be a decently strong coil spring though, for i want the gun to be reliable enough to fire whenever i pull the trigger. :banghead: here is the link: to the website! http://www.gunpartscorp.com/catalog/Products.aspx?catid=6746

i am also considering somehow making it fire .22 pinfire cartridges with the change of a hammer. that way i will have something that is totally unique!

As with nearly everything else, there are Internet forums dedicated to people who want to design and build their own home built firearms. It's legal in the US (most states), as long as you're not making them for sale.
Amazon.com has a bunch of books on designs that have been made and tested, to give you some ideas.

cool! i will take a look! i have decided on an ejector, i will make the trigger guard swing up kinda like on those old sharps rifles, and it will push the shell out so you can retrieve it! i also came up with an idea for a locking breech. the breech will be case hardened and probably will have some nice filework too, i might even engrave my maker's mark!! i will be using a 24 inch octagon barrel that will be blued. i have always liked octagonal barrels! the front sight will be mounted via a dovetail, and the rear sight will be a slot and will be fastened with screws. i am considering buying a .22 smoothbore barrel so i can fire .22 shotshells and get a better pattern, however, said barrel will be interchangeable. this is going to be one cool project!!!

look at some of the old flobert actions, they are very simple.
the trigger assy & hammer are pretty much from the black powder era, you can find all the trigger parts at trackofthewolf.com
some have a breech similar to a rolling block and some just have a simple hinged breech with a spring loaded firing pin.
i have a pair of floberts that eventually i'll get around to rebuilding.

broken rolling block style flobert. i have the parts for this one i just haven't put them on, it also needs the barrel re-lined.
