Shotgun is the most versatile weapon with a huge option of loads. Can harvest both small & large game for survival & offers formidable defensive power with buckshot, only draw back is it's limited range. IF I had to only have one to do it all I know I can count on a 12ga.

I will stay out of this one as I see no point to it. Too many different situations and terrain. What would work for me wouldn't for someone else. I am certainly not going to be wagging a rifle or shotgun around in town. It most likely would not cause much except for some funny looks in my area but I would not put up with the inconvience.

I chose 10mm and have a Glock 20SF & 29SF so concealment in summer attire (my everyday clothes) would not be a problem.

What, no 32 acp or 380 on the list? 😉 😁
But CDW4ME the thread says "in the wild" - Yea, I saw that.
32 acp or 380 deemed sufficient by some for a armed 200# psychotic attacker(s) but not for a 200# bear. 😆

I am surprised in the answers thus far. "In all situations", it would have to be a rifle. They a awkward in close combat, but do-able. Shotguns even with slugs has a very limited range.

Self defense (in all forms) to me means being ready ALL OF THE TIME.

Wheres your 12 gauges, ARs and .308s
RIGHT THIS VERY SECOND??????....

....That's what I thought.

I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around this survey. No .223, 300 BO, or 7.62*39 and no .40
S&W.

If my 1 gun was a pistol, I’d have a hard time not taking my G23 in .40

If a long gun, an AR or my AR hybrid, 5.56 or 7.62*39

I don’t see bolt action rifles making sense anywhere but maybe in the woods…
My sentiments almost exactly.

My .40 caliber Glock would be a G22, cause that’s what I have. My AR, a 16” in .556. I know it’s not considered a dangerous game gun, but I’d take the calculated risk that it would do me well in most situations.

I chose 357 because I believe what you shoot most/best is the correct choice. Mine would be in a 16" lever carbine, and I'd be good in every senerio where I live, as I'm in the south and we don't have big bear.... the stock is super short and it's super compact and maneuverable. I'd feel slightly undergunned in the wild with a revolver 4-6" but I'd still take that caliber in pistol.
Totally agree. A 357 carbine is good for real close encounters and out past 100 yds and is easy to handle and accurate. Just won 1st place at our cast bullet match hitting all 10 targets at 110yds. Hard cast 180s will also ruin any animal’s day. I agree with the folks that voted shotgun for 50yds and under.

.416 Rigby for me. I've had one for most of my adult life and have never been attacked by an elephant, which shows how effective it is. The rest of you bums are welcome to take your chances, but I'm sure you'll come to regret it.
The first place Burglars try to hide is behind the fridge, but you've got that covered!

OK. The question was One Gun for all defensive scenarios. Only. One. Gun.

For every one of you who said some variation of long gun (shotgun, pcc etc.) how do you propose to carry that gun at all times? How do you propose not having the police called on you ever where you go? How do propose not being asked to leave the vast majority of privately owned businesses you enter every day?

Because of the inclusion of a SD ("on the street") requirement, concealment is paramount.

My S&W 329 PD. 26 oz.. 4 inch barrel. Can load with 44 Special for SD at home or in town and .44 Mag in the backcountry. Throw a round butt grip on it and concealment isn’t too bad.

I would be using what I use right now, a G23 in .40 S&W. Concealable, adequate capacity, works well enough in the role of CC/SD/HD and in the wild (I only have mountain lions, no tigers and small bears). The much bigger threat is feral dogs and their deadbeat owners.

What? No .505 Gibbs?

How does it shoot? (And how much do you shoot it?) I'm serious, seriously thinking about trading my Redhawk for one. Love the Redhawk but it's a brick to carry around.
