Bush pauses to comfort teen

During his visit to the Golden Lamb Inn in Lebanon, President Bush stops to hug Ashley Faulkner, who lost her mom in the Sept. 11 attacks.

In a moment largely unnoticed by the throngs of people in Lebanon waiting for autographs from the president of the United States, George W. Bush stopped to hold a teenager's head close to his heart.

Lynn Faulkner, his daughter, Ashley, and their neighbor, Linda Prince, eagerly waited to shake the president's hand Tuesday at the Golden Lamb Inn. He worked the line at a steady campaign pace, smiling, nodding and signing autographs until Prince spoke:

"This girl lost her mom in the World Trade Center on 9-11."

Bush stopped and turned back.

"He changed from being the leader of the free world to being a father, a husband and a man," Faulkner said. "He looked right at her and said, 'How are you doing?' He reached out with his hand and pulled her into his chest."

Faulkner snapped one frame with his camera.

"I could hear her say, 'I'm OK,' " he said. "That's more emotion than she has shown in 21/2 years. Then he said, 'I can see you have a father who loves you very much.' "

"And I said, 'I do, Mr. President, but I miss her mother every day.' It was a special moment."

Special for Lynn Faulkner because the Golden Lamb was the place he and his wife, Wendy Faulkner, celebrated their anniversary every year until she died in the south tower of the World Trade Center, where she had traveled for business.

The day was also special for Ashley, a 15-year-old Mason High School student, because the visit was reminiscent of a trip she took four years ago with her mother and Prince. They spent all afternoon in the rain waiting to see Bush on the campaign trail. Ashley remembers holding her mother's hand, eating Triscuits she packed and bringing along a book in case she got bored.

But this time was different. She understood what the president was saying, and she got close enough to see him face to face.

"The way he was holding me, with my head against his chest, it felt like he was trying to protect me," Ashley said. "I thought, 'Here is the most powerful guy in the world, and he wants to make sure I'm safe.' I definitely had a couple of tears in my eyes, which is pretty unusual for me."

The photo has been circulating across the country, Faulkner said. Relatives have passed it on to friends, bosses and acquaintances. As they tell the story, they also share in Wendy Faulkner's legacy, which her family continues through the Wendy Faulkner Memorial Children's Foundation.

"I'm a pretty cynical and jaded guy at this point in my life," Faulkner said of the moment with the president. "But this was the real deal. I was really impressed. It was genuine and from the heart."

Something you will never see from that stiff, cold fish known as John sKerry.

Bush isn't my favorite, and I make no secret of it. But he is at least human.
That Kerry creature gives me the creeps. I'm certain he's some sort of alien, sent to take over the country.
Maybe next time the aliens will send a better actor. :neener:

I recall the last physical fight I had with my "black sheep" brother. I had to take a kitchen knife away from him. Again. Got one tooth out of place to this day from it. <sigh>

What caused it was that I told him off. I was tired of listening to his ranting about how corrupt the world is, especially politicians. Well, we know most are, but this idiot was insisting that ALL politicians are corrupt and NONE have EVER been otherwise and NONE will ever be otherwise and there are NO people in politics who actually have honorable motives.

I told him that he was judging people he didn't know by the people he chose to hang out with. He hung out with losers and knew nothing else, so he considered ALL people to be the same.

And that pretty much describes most of the leftists. They can't understand a genuine person, because they don't believe such a person exists. They certainly don't know any!

What's that got to do with this? Watch for that same 'mentality' showing itself in regard to this picture. (Probably even here.)

"Oh, he's just playing for the camera!", etc.

I am quite certain that Mr. Bush would rather that picture had never been taken. He'd rather that moment had remained between them, rather than being published. The grief on his face is real. It was not put on for the camera.

I don't like a lot of what Mr. Bush has done and is doing. I'd sure love a chance to tell him why. But I don't doubt his sincerity. He's a real man. I wouldn't be ashamed to shake his hand.

Bush's humanity, as illustrated by his obviously genuine empathy for this girl, stands in stark contrast to the cold cynicism of the leftist Democrats on the 9/11 commission who arranged for a small number of the 9/11 victims families to be present at the hearings and pandered to them shamelessly for the cameras. The oily and insincere Democrat Richard Ben-Veniste is a noteable example of that dark attitude.

John Kerry would undoubtedy have been able to work up a crocodile tear or two on cue for the cameras as he did at a town hall meeting in New Hampshire last September.

You folks don't even want to think about seeing what the nice folks at The Dem underground are saying about this.

Say what you will about the President, he at least is a warm-blooded human bean.

I'm sure the embeds assigned here from DU will arrive shortly to explain it all.:neener: :barf:

This happened in my home town (Lebanon, OH). I wish I had been there. Note that the picture was not staged for the press. The only picture (that shown) was taken by the girl's father.

Why am I only hearing about this here on The High Road and NOT in the media?Oh,right, the voice in my head just sceamed MEDIA BIAS STOOPID!
I'm not a big President Bush fan but he really is a decent guy.At least someone got a picture of it.

And don't get me started about Kerry...

George W. Bush is the greatest President of my lifetime. Excluding "Dutch".
He makes me proud.
He leads this country with a moral compass that points to true north.
Ask that little girl if he's cool.

Yes, he is sincere, he is a man, a father and a husband. He is also warm and really funny, especially at his own expense.

Looking at that picture really brings home all of his good points.

Like most here, I don't agree with all of his policies, but I think he is a stand-up guy.

During my search of topics, I absolutely swear I thought this said "Human TORCH on the campaign trail". I couldn't get here fast enough.

Anyway, Way to go "W" . . . Good stuff!

See, I agree that Bush is most likely a decent human being. This photo and incident are probably real.

A lot of the problems we see with his administration may be him not realizing how wacked a few of his subordinates are. Like, say, ASHCROFT. Dear God what a nutjob. We also see evidence that not near enough Clintonistas were purged from the SecState's office, and infest "foggy bottom" to the point where they've withheld evidence of NK WMDs as one recent example.

Upshot: I think Bush's failing may be his inability to see rotten motives or weird biases when they really exist.

I can honestly say I've met some people in politics who are REALLY decent human beings. Ray Haynes and Rod Wright in California are two such off the top of my head, a GOPer and a Dem respectively.

This doesn't surprise me in the least, it's his mother's genetic contribution you see displayed.

Many times a public figure's images are staged and scripted.....not so with this President. Why doesn't this photo surprise me.....I've had the privilege to work with him and see his off camera personality firsthand.....no acting lessons here....that's the way he really is.

At least the girl won't have to be checked for communicable diseases...as would have been the case if Clinton hugged her.

I wonder.....

If we will see this photo on the front page of the New York times tomorrow.....
........ What......huh......oh, my wife just woke me up.

Be safe.

Man,

That look in his eyes says it all - "If you think that you're going to hurt this little girl again you're going to have to go through me first."

I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.

I have no doubt President Bush is sincere, but that oath, and not sincere grief about a national tragedy, is what his job is supposed to be about.

Think about his statements regarding the Campaign Finance Reform bill, and ask yourself if he has kept that oath.
