A police officer often points his weapon at someone he doesn't intend to shoot unless that person forces the issue. I've never shot anyone in my capcity as a police officer, but I've pointed my weapon at plenty of people while making arrests, and it's been pointed at a few people who weren't arrested during raids.
The kind of houseclearing that is done in law enforcement and in current military operations is a lot different then what you did in the Marines. Nowdays even the military trains for encountering noncombatants while fighting in buildings.
