Many years ago, while I was still pretty green in the gun field, I had a chance to purchase a Merwin Hulbert revolver. As I recall, the gun was an open top, scoop fluted, spur trigger gun. It had a round butt, "skullcrusher" as I recall. What boosted the price was that it was documented to have once belonged to Mexican bandit Juaquin Murietta.

The asking price, as I recall was the princely sum of $200 or so, not the half of which I had.

Years later I learned Juaquin Murietta was killed by California Rangers around 1849, many years before the introduction of the Merwin Hulberts revolvers.
