Back on TFL,I posted a series of threads meant to help newcomers to shotgunning. Since the Archives will be maintained, at least for a while, I see little need for bringing these here.

However, I'd like to continue the series, and post further threads on getting into the shotgun sports,as well as learning "Serious" shotgunning.

How do YOU feel about this? I like to teach, and this could be of value to those of us who lacked the advantages of my upbringing and training. I also stand to learn, BBS like this attract lots of cognizance.

Dave - GREAT idea! How about starting a "floating" thread, beginning with hot links to your "teaching" articles on TFL (with a description of their content, so that new members can understand what each is about), and then continuing the thread with new articles? (Alternatively, you could put new articles in their own threads, and post a hot link to each thread in the "floating" reference library. This would keep the FRL short and to the point.) I'd go for this as the most useful and practical way of keeping the knowledge alive. Eventually, never mind writing the book - just publish the FRL thread! :D

An example of what I mean: on TFL, you published a thread about using a video camera to record yourself shooting, and then using the playback to check defects in your stance, etc. The URL is http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=143621. Instead of listing it in the long-winded fashion I've just used, how about listing it in the FRL thread, with the description being a hot-link to the thread? Something like this:

Use of video as a training aid.

Coupla things not knowing how The Floats work.

I'd suggest a couple floats at Shotgunning, Dave.

One would be a flavor of your past Training-Type Best Bets from TFL. These may, or may not, allow anyone else to toss in their own stuff - wouldn't hurt to heavily moderate to make sure any tip was worthy of a post. TFL had a float regards a best bet for some loadings. Worked enough, but still didn't really do anything other than what a search function could have .... we could talk.

The other might be some of your "walks in the woods" .... a Dave=flavor "top-post" that we could all steal before you publish the same thing. ;)

Worst thing I can see happening here is a very heavily moderated "I can, you can't" thing that turns this forum into a "we're better than you" thing.

Floats = a good thing. Moderation in the moderation = so very much better.

And since I'm new to Moderating, I'll go slow.

Dunno how this will work out, but I'm posting a new thread on ammo next, part of the entry into shotgunning stuff.
 
I have no doubt you'll "go slow," Dave. You're a keeper, Sir.

Only in passing in my own experience as the sole Nat'l TRT moderating thing - you learn as you go.

You'll do good & merely a suggest as some possible floaty-things is all, since you brought it up.

The shotgun float at TFL had some loads. Didn't see it as all that "wonderful" all told, but could easily enough see a couple of your own doing much better.

Floats can be a very good thing. They can also be an "I am, you're not."

You obviously know the difference.

Just an observation, suggestion/feedback & a wish list.

A Dave's Thoughts Float could be a very cool "walk in the woods" type of pass-on to many who never would otherwise come here ..... could garner a few new lurkers/readers/posters/new thinkers-types & soon-to-be leaders. Lots of experience out there who never yet tapped the 'net.

Another, in the frame of the past TFL theme could be one to pass on a "best ofs" ... may, or may not fly as envisioned.

Just a thought.

I am glad you made the transition here !

I am a crusty old guy, that at times, thinks pretty highly of my own knowledge and opinions. Thank goodness prudence steps in from time to time and makes me open my eyes. lol

I always look forward to the threads that open up new ways of thinking, and new ways to accomplish a task. Keep it up !!

I concur.

Videos are a great training aid. Been videoing the range antics for years. Got my younger son AD'ing his singleshot 20 up in the air when his thumb slipped from hammer while cocking. Got my older son shooting my G21 for the first time and the pistol recoiled out of his hands into his arms...(!) Mama didn't like that one for a few years. Its a classic now.

Re runs teach much.
 
I feel that a shotguns thread without them is nowhere near the shotguns thread it pretends to be.
