A pair of revolving rifles

I did have a question about shooting conicals. A .454 round ball will swage easily, there’s not a large bearing surface, and I get the lead ring when I seat them in the cylinder which is good. On average lead round balls I’ve seen are a brinell 5 hardness.

My question is now using 200gr conicals I’ve seen for the 45 colt. Since they’re a larger bearing surface my assumption is the diameter must be perfect because they won’t swage as easily, also most of the conicals I’ve seen are a brinell 12 which seems a bit hard for a cap and ball. Do you have a brand of conical you like? I don’t want to overpressure the gun , or get a bullet jammed that won’t seat in the cylinder
If you cast I recommend the Lee Maxiball, they load easy have lube grooves that are tapered at back for easy loading, I use them in both my rifles and pistols, There was someone sellint\g them cast but I don't remember where I saw them.

This is my entry back into the world ... a 3rd model dragoon ... made by EMF...
J,
I have the same EMF revolver, but don't have the butt stock. Can you take some close-up pictures so I can see the shape of the connector, and how it's cut? (Is dismounted too much to ask?)

I'm not saying yours isn't right, but the one with my revolver at time of purchase had a non-black finish to the brass, and the butt and grip wood had the same stain color. I want to find a proper butt for mine, but might consider modifying a connector intended for a smaller revolver. Regardless, need a permanent reference, like a pic.

Bought mine three years ago at the Novi antique collector's show. Guy who sold it to me had just bought revolver and stock 20 minutes before from another table. He only wanted the butt to "display" with the "original" 3rd dragoon he displayed on his table. He wanted north of $5G for the dragoon. He was thrilled to immediately sell the ASM revolver, get it away from his table. Two months later, very next show, seller does not recognize me, and butt is still on his table. Asked him if he wanted to sell just the butt. Giving me "a great deal", he only wanted $900.

I don't know, maybe the butt accompanying my revolver at time of buy was not correct or even an ASM. Unattached butt had no markings. I never saw it mounted to my revolver.

Dang! I always find 3/4ths of the good deals that others do!

OBTW, the Uberti likely has .451" chamber mouths, the dragoon, .448". Use .454 or .457" round ball or Eras Gone conical, with 20 to 34 gr BP in Uberti. Use .451" or larger RB, or Lee 200gr heeled conical (.450") for ASM. 45 REAL won't pass first ring into ASM chambers. MaxiBalls vary based on mold source. Hunt paper, rb. Hunt deer, dead soft conical.

randys, I used to have one of the long barreled, shoulder stocked ASM Dragoon's; the shoulder stock on mine was blued steel just like the OP's. I have heard that ASM made both blued steel and brass ones.

As LonesomePigeon said they were made in several finishes.

As I understand it from Dr. Davis' (bprevolver's) posts about these, the first ASM 3rd model dragoon/stock sets had blued hardware on the stock.
Next came ones with blue/black anodized metal followed by the bright brass mounted ones that are still available today for $2-300.
The owners of original Colt made 3rd dragoons prized the blued replicas as they most closely resembled the stocks that Colt supplied with the originals thus the $900 price tag.

Jessesky,
Thank you for the response! Please don't bother with the pics, as EK's post references covered what I was after, (unless you want to). I have a good 1860 stock, and was considering mods to make it fit the dragoon. I will keep my nice stock for 1860s, and find a cheap(er) beater or frame-only to fit to the dragoon. Regarding a conversion cylinder, is Uberti "drop-in" for an old ASM dragoon?

LP, EK,

Thank you for the replies! The post links were great! I probably read them at some point over the years, as I was thinking similar challenges to fitting 1860 stock to dragoon. The history is fresh, now. I thought the $900 unscrupulous as it seemed he was misrepresenting the unmarked stock. The buyer always determines value. The revolver came to me out of nowhere, maybe an ASM stock will too someday. Now, for a holster ...
