When speaking I always say Concealed Carry Permit, when typing/writing I always use CCW. I didn't vote. :)

I think that we should move to make the name the same. There is too much going on. Maybe a motion to name it CCW "Concealed Carry Weapon" and that's it.

Who's "we?"

Are you saying we should try to change each of our state's laws to make the term used universal? Is that important somehow? (I mean, well, we could go for universal reciprocity... that might be worth the effort.)

Or are you saying we, as individuals, should all start calling our licenses something different from what the states actually call them in law? Why would we do that?

In many states, Tennessee for one, concealment is not a part of the provision. Handgun Carry Permit is the only correct term so far as Tennessee is concerned.

I'll disagree. I want no part of a permit that specifies only concealed.

Accidental exposure has led to the suspension of permits in some cases. The same for "printing".

No, no concealed permits for me!

It doesn't seem to matter much. It is entirely unclear if we're supposed to be petitioning our legislatures to change their legal terms of art, or if this is just an attempt to get us all to ignore what terms our states use and start calling them [strike]clips[/strike] (er, I mean uh magazines! wait, no...) CCWs among ourselves.

CHL is the most concise of all the options. It's the only one that specifies the type of weapon (or that it's weapon at all), the method of carry and that it's a license. CHP (concealed handgun permit) would be just as good, but it isn't one of the poll choices.

CHL is the BEST option...

1. You don't need a license to carry a gun in public, at least in my beloved Indiana (check local listings, sorry CA et al)
2. It specifies that you have a handgun, of any type
3. It is a license, not a permit. It is your right to carry a gun and the state does not have to give you permission.

Just my 2 cents...

All right, as the presiding starter of this thread, I've carefully considered everybody's input and have come up with another recommendation for the High Road Concealed Carry Committee Club Collaboration Conference.

How about WCL?

Weapon Carrying License.

This License, valid in the State in which it is Issued, empowers its holder to carry weapons.

In Alabama, the state vernacular changes by county. My current county just says "pistol license." However I think CCW is the most broad and recognizable definition, which is why I use it on 2A boards such as THR.

In TN it's a Handgun Carry Permit, as there's no requirement to conceal, and you can't open carry without the permit either.

I'm all for it, as that's what Georgia does. It's a GWL or GWCL here. If one really needs to narrow it down call it a NC-WCL or AL-WCL if there is a state specific issue with the license.

Michigan it is a CPL, Concealed Pistol License.

CCW is the charge you get for carrying a pistol without a license.

Would like to see CC, Constitutional Carry in Michigan, as both the 2A and our own Constitution covers carrying weapons. Michigan clarifies it as an individual right to carry a weapon for defense.

So the majority of respondents call the license itself a conceal carry weapon. Interesting. I guess I can't read. I was certain the OP was asking about the name for the license/permit itself.

I asked my cousin in-law from Ohio if she got her carry permit. She knew what I was talking about even though my state and her state have different names for the permit. No she didn't get her permit yet, she turned 21 last fall.
.

In Louisiana, within the parish, (you have the option - statewide License or parish license), it is a concealed handgun license.

My state....

The formal classification for my state is W. But I've also seen CCW and CWL used.
I use the term: CCW for most weapons-firearms that are concealed.
The local print-TV media constantly uses the term: concealed weapon permit when any citizen or journalist can clearly see the state issues W/licenses.
