I'm starting to load this round for the first time am using Winchester 115g FMJ hollow base with the lead exposed. I'm using a load out of the Lee manual for 115g FMJ but I am assuming that is for a completely jacketed bullet. Am I OK in using this load (4.5gr titegroup) for this bullet or do I need a different load? Thanks

start out at a -10% rate and see how that works most likely you will be fine however I am sure some one will ring in with better information.

Do like Eric said. Max load is 4.5 grains of Titegroup. You should start 10% below max and work the load up. You will ususlly find the best load for your gun before you reach max. I shoot a lot of Titegroup in 9mm. I like 4.3 for 115 grain and 4.1 for 124 grain. These shoot good in my CZ 75. I just bought a Glock 17 and will have to work up a load for it.

Lee is just reprinting powder company data.
Hodgdon website shows 4.8 gr Titegroup maximum with a 115 gr Gold Dot. No separate listing for FMJ.

I did load that bullet once, 6.4 gr of Accurate Arms #5, worked very well in my PCR. Found Remington 115gr JHPs cheaper, never bought the Winchesters again. Too bad.

If you look at load data over the past 15 yrs, it has become more and more conservative (lower charges). I start about 10% over the starting loads and work from there. Powder companies are seriously covering their asses these days. Your hollow based bullets are allowing more space for hotter loads.

I don't think the base being exposed matters. When they talk about jacketed, I've always understood that to mean just the sides of the bullet are jacketed. Lead exposed at the base or the nose of the bullet shouldn't matter.

That's strange. The Lee manual gives a max charge of 4.8g of titegroup.
he didnt say he was using max charge he said he was using 4.5 gr

I start about 10% over the starting loads and work from there.
although I agree with you on most data its not a good idea to start over max recomended load I have seen atleast 1 person do that to the effect of destroying a 2k pistol

not too sure on that one either. I shoot 38super and have a hollow base bullet I saw this info before droped powder into the base of the bullet level with the rim weighed the powder came to .1gr it was AA#2 that amount is only good for roughly 25fps to 50fps not enough to make a diffrence. besides even with a max load the only way this would count for anything is in a compressed load. And with smokeless its not a good idea for most powders.

I also load a lot of 115g9mm with titegroup, both with exposed based jacketed rounds, and plated rounds, and have settled in at 4.3-4.2 grains as my standard load with no real deviation in performance between the bullets.

he didnt say he was using max charge he said he was using 4.5 gr
Max load is 4.5 grains of Titegroup.
Maybe I'm dense but it seems to me he said exactly what I thought he said. That's what got me concerned. I was starting out with a charge of 4.5 as my starting load and he is saying 4.5 is max. I'm pretty new at this so when somebody says something like that I sit up and pay attention.

No I was not refering to you I just used your quote. It made sense to me when I posted but looking at it again looks wrong now. Sorry

The hollow base bullets are considered fmj. They are supossed to give you more bearing surface, or contact with the brass. I like the flatbase fmjs myself, give me better groups.:)

Midway had them on sale last week for 31.99/500. Thought I'd give em a try.
I hope they perform well, I ended up getting a 1000.

karnaaj, I got 4.5 max from my manual. It's the Speer #13. There have been other times when it has been lower than a lot of other sources. It looks like I need to get another manual or two and start using the powder manufactures web sites.
