I have two revolvers I'd like to have drilled and tapped for a scope mount. I'd prefer a weaver base as opposed to propriety rings. I wish to retain the option to remove said mount and install factory iron sights. One is a S&W 686-2 and the other is a Colt Officers Model Match.
I have no idea what mount to purchase for the Colt so any suggestions would be appreciated.
The problem on the 686 is the mounts that are available for the later 686's that come drilled and tapped are set up for 6-48 screws and the hole closest to the muzzle is very close to the 3-56 screw for the factory iron sights. As a gunsmith would you rather I get the mount for the later 686 and you drill a new hole in the mount a little farther back. Or would you rather I get a blank mount with no holes drilled in it. EGW offers one.

I already have the one for the factory drilled and tapped revolver from Weigand.
P.S. Would a regular machine shop be something to consider? I have a lot more of them in my area than Gunsmiths. If you are accustomed to drilling and tapping metal in general, would you attempt this with normal hand tools (and yes I know I'm probably an idiot for asking this)?
