At present we have a law in the UK that stipulates a Mandatory five year jail sentence for possession of an illegal firearm, except in exceptional circumstances.

It would seem that the only people being given the full five year sentence are people of good character who are of no danger to society. The press is full of cases of criminals being given a shorter sentence after giving a hard luck story.

The following report should be a warning to you Good Guys in the USA to avoid further gun legislation,(Especially gun registration).

BTW An air rifle with a power of over 12ft lbs is an illegal firearm in the UK.

Farmer's son jailed for gun offence

Jailed: Andrew Richardson
CHRISTINE CUNNINGHAM

21 February 2009 06:00

The son of a leading Norfolk farmer and veteran TV broadcaster was starting a five-year jail term last night after mistakenly falling foul of laws designed to prevent gangland crime and gun-running.

Andrew Richardson, 48, accidentally shipped a lethal revolver and ammunition from America, where he had been living, when he returned to live in the county 12 years ago. Instead of handing it in to police he decided to keep it, placing the weapon in storage.

But yesterday a judge at Norwich Crown Court said he had no option but to jail Richardson as the weapon could have easily fallen into the wrong hands.

Last night it emerged family and friends had been unaware of the court appearance - and only learnt the full details when contacted by the EDP. His father, leading Norfolk farmer, broadcaster and commentator, David Richardson said he could not comment until he knew the full facts of the case.

Robert Warner, prosecuting, told the court the .22 revolver which was in full working order was found placed in a green shoe box along with 10 to 15 live cartridges which could be used in the gun.

Mr Warner said that a police check revealed the gun had not been used in any known crimes: “There is no evidence this weapon has been fired in relation to any matters that police are aware of.”

When questioned by the police, Richardson said he had been given the gun and had used it to shoot rattlesnakes.

The court heard that he placed the gun in secure storage with the Big Yellow Self Storage Company, in Norwich, after it was transported amongst his other belongings.

But after a dispute over rent with the company the items were sent to a Norfolk auction house and when the gun and ammunition were found, police were called in and Richardson was arrested and interviewed about the matter.

Under tight new laws to crackdown on gun crime the minimum term for possessing an illegal gun is five years, unless there are exceptional circumstances.

When questioned by police he said Richardson told police how he had spent a significant period of time from 1980 to 1997 living in the United States.

Richardson, of Damage Street Wymondham, who is of previous good character admitted possession of a gun and ammunition without a certificate.

Jailing him, Recorder Peter Guest said that the tight laws on firearms were as a result of Parliament's concern about the potential availability of firearms to criminals.

He added: “The law is concerned here with firearms which are lethal weapons. You acquired this weapon legally in the Unites States and I am told it was brought to this country not at you behest, but accidently.

“You realised that this firearm should have been given to the authorities for destruction but you did not do that. It is impossible to fathom why you thought it appropriate to keep this lethal weapon and ammunition in storage.”

He said if a criminal gang had broken into the secure storage depot they might have got their hands on the gun.

“If it had been someone with a criminal mind then it could have taken a different course and that gun and ammunition could have fallen into the wrong hands and be used potentially for lethal purposes,” Mr Guest added.

Jude Durr, for Richardson, argued there were mitigating circumstances. He said that Mr Richardson was highly experienced businessman and had been working in Texas before his return to the UK where he was legally given the gun by his employer.

Mr Durr said the Richardson had planned to deal with it later but in the meantime had placed it with other items into secure storage and forgot about it as it had such a “non-existent role” in his life.

After the hearing his legal team said they were considering appealing against the sentence.

Apparently someone got their hands on his gun, because later...

Shootings leave six people hurt

Six people were hurt in two separate shootings in London within hours of each other.

In the first attack three teenagers, two aged 17 and one aged 18, were shot in Well Street, Hackney, east London, at 2150 GMT on Friday.

All three were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Hours later, a gunman "randomly" shot a 44-year-old woman and two men, aged 30 and 35, outside the North Pole pub in Greenwich, south-east London.

Drive-by shooting

They were taken to hospital where they are all in a stable non-life threatening condition.

The two attacks are not being linked by police.

The Metropolitan Police said the three victims in Greenwich were not deliberately targeted.

"It is understood that a car had pulled up outside the venue and a white suspect had got out and fired shots randomly," said a Met police spokesman.

"None of the victims are thought to have been targeted deliberately.

"There was a scuffle and the suspect then jumped back into the car, driven by another male, and left the scene."

Police said two people - a man and woman both in their 20s - had been arrested in connection with the Greenwich shooting, which happened shortly before 0240 GMT on Saturday.

... and we know that there are no illegal guns in the UK :D

I really feel for you guys across the pond. It saddens me to see my brethren be treated in such a way.

You guys really need to do something about it...

And let me guess: HAD the gun "fallen into the wrong hands" and someone committed armed robbery with it, assuming the state did not recover the gun and therefore couldn't prove its possession case, the robber would face considerably less than five years, for a first offense?

Too bad England has no Constitution. I know, I know, it's "unwritten." So is Halley's Fifth.

Give that man a cigar.

In my experience of the UK Justice system (it may have changed in the 8 years since I left), the primary targets are either repeat offenders, or easy targets. Easy targets being generally law abiding citizens, who incidentally or unintentionally transgress a relatively minor law, and wind up talking themselves into a charge. Repeat offenders being guilty of some more serious crime burglary, robbery, aggravated assault/grievous bodily harm, etc. who are given lenient sentences and who get caught again, proving the system is an ass.

Then people in the UK wonder why I came to the US...

The people of the Country that once ruled the world have turned into sheep.
I have neighbors from the UK.
I once put a Browning HP on the table. The woman actually recoiled at the sight of it.
Her husband wouldn't touch it. He thought it would go off.

Simply amazing

In my travels, It has been to meet others from countries where there are terribly draconian gun restrictions when compared to our own. By and large they are all curious about handguns and many hold a that these weapons have near mythical powers. To a person they will accept an invitation to go shoot and haven't had one not enjoy the experience. As with most abhorrences, the gun abhorrence is usually devoid of any actual experience or hard intelligence and it is almost always an abstract global not 'locally' based feeling.

i was in london two weeks ago for a day, since the business partner screwed up i had time to walk around until my flight.

walking around the Piccadilly Circus and Soho, in those 4 hours, i seen more, what i believe where guns or very big knifes, tucked in to peoples Belts then i did in my entire live in switzerland.

a member of a other forum said you can get SIG pistols, stolen from the army, for 400 british pound, Glocks are a buit more expensiv.
the only problem you face then is geting the ammo, wich costs you up to 1pound each round.

it appears that guns can be had in abundance but ammo is the limiting factor.

To all you good people in the UK,please do not take what I am going to say the wrong way;for I am NOT seeking to insult or denigrate you....
For a long time when there was an Empire, for better or worse;you guys RULED.It seems like back in th eday sof empire, your nation recognized and respected more of you rights as a people.Your colonials were not always treated well,my Mom's family in Ireland had a decidedly mixed experience with you ,but evryone knew where they stood.I will take an enemy who hates me and lets me know they want me dead over being bled white with "sensitivity " any day.
Up until the yars follwoing WWI,there seemed to be an understanding and recognition of the RBKA in UK;since then it seems like both major parties sold you out via the Home Office and an increasingly hard Socialist mindset.
I know none of this happened overnight;but it still is wrenching to see thge difference then and now....and the template being laid in place here.

Man putting a good person in prison for garbage, how do they not think that guy coming out of jail isn't going to be seriously pissed. How do they think he's simply not going to look up the folks responsible for his unjust internment and get some righteous revenge, some seriously scarey stuff, partly while I'm glad I'll never be in law enforcement.

The judges might have guns but what about the prosecutors, or their children, will their children have guns as they walk from school to protect themselves. Man, putting a righteous person in prison for garbage is seriously scarey. A fully intelligent, logical, reasonsing person with a grudge to settle is a very scarey thing, especially in a society that buys into not defending one's self or having basic human rights. Hope when this guy gets out he don't seek real justice against the scum in power, that'd be a bad thing I hope doesn't happen.

Gasoline is still legal, you don't need the Nazi's approval to get it right, and matches, man I'd be freakin scared out of my mind.

Gunggir, I dont wonder why you went to the U.S. I would probably go myself if I could, but I doubt that's possible :(

This is my country, and there's gun crime yeah, though I've walked around Picadilly and central London many many many times, I've never seen a gun on open display, ever.

Language

What struck me reading the Orwellian article was how often the term "lethal" was used by police and the reporter. Strange in that guns by definition can be lethal, so what is the point of reflexively throwing in this adjective? Hypnotic repetition of lethal-lethal-lethal and the fear mounts. Pathetic nation and a preview of our America.......

Hey Throddgrain.

The thing that people are confused about are when I say Political Differences were what made me leave. Most of the Brit's I know over here, are typical whiners, who came here for the work, not the country. Tho the work was a bonus :)

Babbalanaja, I thought that funny too. It's a 22 caliber revolver, of the type, "you need to be careful, you might put your eye out".

Hardly lethal, Wonder what the British Press would make of our family collection :)

But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.
Declaration of Independence

I think it's the press that have as much to do with it as anything else. Recently a middle-aged woman was sent mistakenly by courier a police training gun. She rang the police and the story was about, the first press question seemed to be "were you afraid?" "were you terrified?"

What of? A metal thing in a box?

It makes me weep :/

Just goes to show ya.

Like the "arsenal" recently found in a storage unit in Washington, yet another storage unit find.

It would seem better to keep weapons out of storage units the world 'round.

Five year felony for possession of a .22lr pistol and a minor amount of ammo.

UNBELIEVABLE, draconian and, quite frankly, evil.

Moral of the story? Pay your bills or move your "illegal" objects. Simple

If only the continuance of precious liberty against an evil and inexhaustably funded government could be countered so "simply."

Just go in the cattle cars and turn on the shower head. Simple

I think for some people, not necessarily you, the struggle against the wicked and ceaseless anti-gunners is so exhausting that it's easier to simplify it so it looks winnable.
