A secret tape made after Columbine shows the NRA's evolution on school shootings

It’s been over 20 years and quite a few mass shootings since Columbine. Each shooting becoming more and more politically charged.

Why release the recordings now?

We pretty much knew the NRA had this rot for decades, not much new here. Didn't we all know some variation of this meeting was going on?

I'm no fan of the NRA in it's current state, but I can sympathize with their train of thought on donating money or holding the conference. No matter what they did the media would have blamed them.

The NRA also should be a little nicer to those so called fruitcakes and nuts. They're the only ones willing to ignore the NRA's issues and stick with them through it all.

With today's technical ability to create video, and I am sure audio, that appears to be authentic that can duplicate anyone's voice or image, I would not take this as gospel just yet.It may be authentic. It may not be.

WLP spent over 25 grand on suits in a year... that we paid for. I'm not surprised, nor do I doubt, the the NRA leadership considered much of its membership "loonies" and "crazies."

I'm wondering what NPR has to gain by releasing these recordings at this juncture in time. The organization has already been much discredited.

'Tis all very strange.

I’m not sure how a pragmatic “reading of political and social terrain” can be described as “rot”. A discussion like that, in those circumstances, seems like perfectly normal thing to have.

It’s just keeping up the pressure against the organization. The anti’s smell the blood in the water.

I didn’t really read/hear anything that was a big deal, especially now.

They were in a bad position and had differing opinions about the best way to handle it, and they had a conference call about it.

what was so bad?
I must have missed it.

The cynicism of LaPierre & co was (and is) evident. They treated the rank and file NRA members with condescension and contempt. "Nut cases," they said.

The recorded discussion was about whether or not to cancel the scheduled NRA Meeting after Columbine. Some of the Board said that the Exhibits would be "inappropriate." Then there was a discussion of whether to hold the Meeting without the Exhibits. Some said that in that case, the Meeting would attract only the "nuts."

Meh made a decision a while back they will no longer get my money. Let them go under. And switch to new management. Failing that. They will no longer be w us. Or should I say against us? Plenty of other organizations that help our cause. And don’t spend our money like it’s on fire.

People on the left side of politics that are not gun people believe the NRA is the be all and end all of the gun community, so they will relay anything negative about it.

A friend of a friend in a political thread started listing every liberal anti NRA talking point in a rant against the gun community's stance on the 2A. When I told him that many, if not most, of the gun community doesn't care what the NRA says or does he essentially called me a liar since the NRA is such a boogy man to them

That’s assuming that “tank and file” NRA members are hillbillies. Pretty sure that’s not true. People love labels and boxes though, I suppose.

Sticks and stones. Who cares?

Send them a check, then.
Already did.

Years ago, I had some money just burning a hole in my pocket, and had two flyers in the mail. One was for the NRA, and the other was for the Brady campaign.

I’m certainly not regretting my choice.

But, I still don’t really see anything with these “explosive, super secret, recordings, except for some “snake in the grass” drive by nonsense.

Just to keep the ball bouncing.

What would be great is maybe we could donate some money for reading lessons, that way, the political power class could simply learn to read the constitution. Then, we wouldn’t need lobbyists to represent us to begin with.

Wouldn’t that be nice.

;-)

When/where did that happen. I’m seeing the accusation over and over but nothing to support it. Maybe I missed it ?

I did hear them discuss the bad optics if said nut cases and hillbilly’s got to the mic and got press. Well that’s just true, and if you don’t think nut cases and hillbilly’s exist in the NRA, you’re wrong.

I'd say both of these are true. The NRA has long been pretty cynical in manipulating their membership for profit while making some questionable legal and financial decisions. It's pretty clear why the leaks are being made public now- they're legitimately newsworthy. No matter if you're pro- or anti-NRA it's really interesting to get a glimpse at how the sausage is made.

Nothing I have to say about the NRA is going to advance this discussion. But I think someone who reveals the truth about them is doing a public service. It would not be regarded as "betrayal" if it was GOOD for the NRA. Maybe the NRA should not be doing things it does not want the general public to know about?

“NRA bashing, brought to you by NPR. This message has been financed by the Bloomberg / Brady et al anti gun campaign”.

Just keep following that bouncing ball...boing boing boing...

Honestly, as hated as the NRA is by the anti’s, and the measures that are being employed to smear them, every bit of support for them, is like a sharp stick in the eye of the rabidly hateful anti’s that are doing everything they can to bring them down. I don’t really care about what underwear WLP is wearing or how much it costs. If me giving money to them equates to a big middle finger to the likes of Pelosi, Biden, the NYAG, and the other rabidly hateful anti’s, I’m ok with that.

If the choice is:

A- poking a stick into the eye of the anti’s by supporting the NRA.

B- playing into the hands of the anti’s by buying into their plot to bring down the most powerful pro 2A lobbying group.

I’ll take A.

I’ve wasted more money on dumber things. I consider it gambling. If I HAVE to bet on a horse, I’ll bet on the one that at least professes to be pro 2A.

Can't believe someone recorded them.

Can’t believe that after Nixon, people think they won’t get out..,

Lots of people have devices they have put on their person, drive or brought into their homes, that are listening to them all the time. Sure, for their use they are waiting for key words but..,

Should have told him 90% of gun owners are not even members of the NRA since the NRA only has 5 million members.
