A Shooter's M1 Rifle Battery: 5
1 - Shooter
1 - Spare
3 - Curios

All happen to be "Luck-of-the-Draw" CMP Service Grade Springfields, w/ < 1.0/2.0 bores (save the 2.0/3.0 6-digit), and all in USGI walnut.

The shooter and the spare are both 5.8M Greeks.

The shooter bein' a LEAD '69 rebuild in a sappy 3/8" DAS SA/pg Ordnance wheel and RA-P stamped stock, the spare being collector metal in a 3/8" DAS HRA stock.

The Curios are all vintage WWII:
- 6-Digit (MAY42), sanded SA/GAW stock, '44 SA Bbl., and a lot of WWII and Winchester parts.
- 1.06M (DEC42), VAR Bbl'ed Dane w/ a DAS SA stock.
- 1.47M (MAR43), w/ a Marine Corps MCSCB '65 hang-tag and a sanded SA/JLG w/ Ordnance wheel stock.

I'm not closed to further Garands and have given a couple away but now what I want.... what I really really want is a pristine Beretta!

Just one, a Blue Sky Korean reimported '43 SA with matching barrel, originally in an ugly Chui wood stock. Its in some nice NOS walnut now, I forget the inspector stamp. The bore measures 3.0, but it still shoots minute-of-enemy.

It rarely gets shot as it is. I would feel bad if I had 4 others being neglected the same way.:)

Been looking for one of those Navy .308 Winchester conversions myself, but haven’t finished looking into the clips of these rifles...

308 Garands use same clips as 30-06.

While not absolutely necessary, a magazine block is available to shorten the magazine to fit the shorter 308 round and prevent them from migrating forward due to recoil.

If op-rod spring is up to snuff, they will not slide forward, but once the op-rod spring weakens, they will slip forward. First manifestation of this problem will be 8th round failure to feed caused by (8th round) bullet point striking above chamber on heel of barrel. Extremely weak springs can produce 7th round jams.

hps

Hey, thanks!

I appreciate the information!

308 Garands use same clips as 30-06.

Speaking of clips, there are alterations which can be made to original clips that assist in loading less than the standard 8 rounds.
The first makes single loading safer and easier, as single loading clip is inserted in rifle and then loaded round is pushed down against follower to be picked up when bolt is released. The spring tension on follower slows bolt down to help prevent slam fires, as opposed to dropping round in chamber and releasing bolt.

To make this device, make hacksaw cuts as indicate above. Bend tab A toward center of clip, tab B outward slightly. Slight filing may be necessary to allow tab B to catch under left receiver rail. To release device, pry tab B slightly inward and remove the clip.

If you live in a state requiring reduced magazine capacity and would like to hunt with your Garand, you can make a clip to hold whatever number of rounds allowed as shown below:

This clip holds only 2 rounds but could be made to hold 5 rounds or whatever. Drill hole make saw cuts as indicated. I ground a rounded corner on a piece of 3/4" square stock to use as an anvil inside clip to bend the round the lower lip w/small ball-peen hammer of clip to hold 2 rounds.

Clip is inserted same as 8 round clip and ejected when empty.

2 CMP Springfields. 1 service grade, bought at Camp Perry, 1 all correct, gift from purple heart organization.

I read the OP, but I need a translation of all the acronyms. This is an example of "clear only if known" (COIK).

I like the shooters, SA & HR, I've found that ordering one and making a request for a HR and a shooter gets you a nice gun, I think the HRs look better than all the others. I enjoy seeing the eyes of younger shooters when I offer to let them shoot mine and the smile afterwards

Gotta admit to same. Assume the blue ones are inspector stamps on stock?? Please expand on the red ones below:D:

Unfortunately, I've been primarily a shooter, not a collector most of my life, as evidenced by the two pristine Winchester pre-64 National Match rifles that I turned in to "shooters" in the early '80's:

And the $99 Klein's "hand selected:(" M1 Garand (The 6 digit SN built in March of 1942 which has British proof marks on barrel !!)

I replaced the junk stock, accurized and put NM sights on it:what:. Shot the barrel out, but did have sense enough not to replace it, which, I guess, makes it my "Curio" rifle:).

My DCM Garand received same treatment and was my match shooter..........
40876427273_91b9a061ce_o.jpg
....until my eyes went south, then came the "no drill" scope base and brought the old girl out of retirement, once more.

With my competitive years far in the rear view mirror, I now recognize the "mistakes" I made in prior years, but the smile on my face somehow overshadows any regrets in turning those "collectors" into "shooters" :D.
