What does subsonic ammo sound like out of a 6 inch barrel? Much different than out of a rifle? I'm not looking for extreme accuracy just practice ammo that won't create much noise. My plan is to plink and practice with that stuff, then leave it loaded with magnums since it is my only handgun.

My wife and I have shot .22 CB in the house, into a stack of phone books :what:. They are still loud enough to require ear plugs. They were shot from a Single-Six, a Taurus M94 and a S&W 317 AirLite. After a dozen rounds the house began to smell like an indoor gun range :barf:.

I wouldn't be shooting guns in the house without a ventilation system to get the lead out. That's a good way to get lead poisoning.

Sort of like breathing the "air" here in Houston :banghead:

A dozen rounds in the house is probably no more harmful than an hour at the local indoor range :uhoh:.

Just about anything out of a revolver is "sub-sonic" which simply means that the bullet velocity is too low to create a bullet "crack" (aka a "sonic boom"). The noise of discharge is about the same whether the bullet is sub-sonic or not.

I do not recommend firing any firearm in the house. If inexpensive practice is wanted, try one of the several air or CO2 pistols available. Those are nearly silent and the projectiles can be trapped safely without creating lead dust. Note that lead can come not only from bullets but also from the lead styphnate primers still used in most ammunition.

Most indoor ranges today have good air handling systems that quickly remove lead and powder fumes and filter the air before venting it to the outside or recirculating it; few homes have similar systems.

I don't have any experience with the stuff, but you might look into Aguila Colibris which contain only priming mix and contain a 20gr bullet. The link below states 375fps, 6ftlbs energy, which isn't much more than an airpistol. They also say you can shoot indoors, but like the others, I'd consider them "outdoor only".

In addition to the air or CO2 pistols, you could also consider an airsoft pistol, which shoots a plastic pellet, so lead poisoning isn't even posssible if you must shoot indoors.

I haven't shot the Colibris, but I have shot Super Colibris from my 4 5/8" Single Six. They are slightly more powerful than standard Colibris (~500 fps), but still powderless, primer-only.

The Super Colibris are fairly pleasant to shoot without ear protection outside. Less noisy than a firecracker. I wouldn't shoot them in an enclosed space without ear protection however.

I used to dance cans in my back yard in New Jersey with a 5.5" Single Six and Aguilla Colibris. I was backed up against a state forest, but we had neighbors. You could hardly hear it inside our house. You can get Colibris on line if your local stores haven't got them.
