A special afternoon project

Well this is far past an afternoon project now but it nearing its end.

I finished a holster and have been carrying the 44 for a week now.
Hand stitched from leftover leather from the local saddle shop, suede lined and kydex inserts in the panels front and back to keep it well supported on the belt. Cylinder just above the belt to reduce bulk. 2B0D6531-92A6-4534-BDEA-5D86659DB25D.jpeg

Also finish the knife I was making to match... i the micarta doesn’t match the pistol grip as well as I had hoped but oh well...
O1 tool steel.. ground and heat treated in my garage. 1D92D407-0F79-48C6-91CA-83961461E617.jpeg D095B666-8F9B-49C0-A427-CF6C8615A56D.jpeg

Now all that left is to make a sheath for the knife and for the speed strips that just arrived in the mail

Wow, you're quite the DIYer! First the customized revolver, then a holster for it, and now a matching knife, with a sheath soon to follow!

Kudos to you sir on your mighty impressive craftsmanship!

Deepest respect for your talent and craftsmanship.

Man I love the DIY stuff.

Thanks guys. My family often has told me I have a ‘project accumulation disorder’.. or the ‘I can do that too/better’ disease.. I prefer to think of myself as a cheapskate with a garage full of tools :)
But as with most of my interests my tastes are quite particular I soon find that no one sells exactly what I want.. and that’s when the fun starts

ive Been kicking myself for years for not buying a s&w 696 when I had two separate chances... :( haven’t seen a reasonably priced one in years. So I started collecting parts: 296 44 spl cylinder, 696 barrel ( both from eBay ) and a 696 hand from midway. Had the parts sitting my drawer for a few months waiting to find a basket case 686 donor when it hit me: I already have a basket case 686... barrel was tapped for a scope, bubba checkered backstrap... so when my plans for the day got cancelled and my wife is off to the city I figured it was time.

And a family shot of all the 3 inchers... I hadn’t even realized until just now that I now have j-k-l-n frames all represented in 3” barrels

There is no bigger fan of 3" Smith and Wessons than me so I am extremely jealous.

Bluejeans;;; your setup looked so good that I ordered the grey/black grip for my new 3" 686+. Been wrenching on it a bit to get it just the way I want.

I've got the same "nobody makes it the way I want it" affliction. But, it does make for some pleasant evenings tinkering. :)

:)

I’d love to see that when it’s done. A 686+ is next on my list to replace the one I donated to the 44spl

View attachment 827802 I took the lazy way out and ordered a set a vz square butt grips and then sanded them down to the size I wanted... more of a boot grip. I think this color of laminate really blends the gray cylinder in quite nicely.
I still would like to round off the heel of the frame a bit but the pistol is downright tolerable as-is so I’ll hold off a couple of months to be sure I’m still of that opinion before I do what can’t be undone.

Great job

Very cool project. I'm impressed with your DIY abilities! The Ti cylinder in the steel N frame with a 3" barrel makes for a very nicely balanced package and the weight savings it's welcome when carrying. I had an M28-2 made into a 3" RB .41mag using a 327PD cyl and M58 barrel, great carry gun.

Very nice work, all of it!

On the holster, when you say you added kydex, looking at the pictures, it's on the "wings" where the belt loops attach it looks like? That's an excellent idea, and I wanted to confirm that before I go off half cocked on a project of my own.

that is correct. i moulded a couple pieces of kydex around my wife's 3 gallon pot for a hip-ish curve, cut out the desired shape and glued (copntact cement) between the two layers of leather. then ihand stitched the leather all around the perimeter just off the edge of the kydex (bending the leather a bit makes it easy to see where the kydex is underneath.)
it's working very well as has very little "flop" compared to other leather holsters i have.

hope this helps you cook up something sweet.
