and you know what that means boys & girls. I'll be in my stand by 0600 on Sunday the 2nd hoping for bambi to meander by me and my Hoyt Aspen with Carbonlite limbs. Will probably be hunting by Sat evening, after I work til 1pm Sat. Still looking for my 1st bow deer. Can't wait! :) :D

I was out this morning looking for a little freezer meat. Had 3 does come by broadside at 10-15 yards... but it was a few minutes too early and a smidge too dark. Then a buck... enough light, legal time and utterly clueless about my presence. Unfortunately, it was a young 4 point.

I let him go, but will be trying again for a doe tomorrow (and the next day, etc... until I get one). This is my first season bow-hunting, but just having the deer that close has really got me hooked. I've postponed my grouse hunting and may even miss the duck opener... I think something may be wrong with me.

Our early season ends tomorrow. Dove is out also. Next open season is Qual in Oct.

Best thing for me being the 1st of Oct is I finally put on E-7 :D

GGB,

Good luck on your opening day and the rest of your season. There is nothing quite as gratifying as your first archery deer. Now if I can just make up my mind which stand I want to hunt on October 1 I'll be good to go.

Trapper,

I'm sorry to report, but yes, there is something very wrong with you. Once I started bow hunting, the affliction grew and grew to the point where I gave up almost all other forms of hunting. Goose hunting: done. Duck hunting: done. Grouse hunting: done. Pheasant hunting: done. Squirrel hunting: done. There are few things hunting-wise more gratifying than the first bow-kill.

After this evening, I may go back to shotguns and birds. :cuss:

Had two bucks within 25 yards... should have been a chipshot.

But, in the process of standing I had snagged my (mechanical) broadhead and it partially deployed one of the blades. When I drew on the closest deer, there was a loud "click" as the blade hit the pin guard on my sight. Both deer pivoted their heads right at me, and when I completed my draw (with accompanying "screetch" of metal-on-metal), they bolted.

Arghhhhh!!!!

BTW, I swapped the mechanicals out for fixed-blades within an hour or two.

Let's see what else can happen tomorrow. :banghead:

I hope you shot the fixed blades shortly after you swapped them out to make sure your POI is still the same.

On that note, I know how you feel. Happened to me in the past. Only difference was the bow limb creaked enough to make a nervous deer dissapear in a nanosecond.

Lennyjoe - I haven't yet... but I'm going out today and shoot some into my Block until I'm comfortable with them. BTW, congrats on the E-7!

Trapper,

What rest are you using? You may want to consider a full containment rest like the Whisker Biscuit to prevent everything that happened to you from happening again. It's an excellent hunting rest.

I'm already using a Whisker Biscuit, and consider it a great rest. However, I was in a homemade permanent tree-stand, which has some low plywood sides covered in camoflaged burlap. I had been sitting on a 5-gal bucket, and when I stood up, the broadhead snagged the burlap and one blade partially deployed. I didn't notice it until I drew.

It was just a fluke... but MAN was it irritating.

Trapper,

Wow, that definitely stinks. Now get back out there and get a big one. :D I still have to wait another week until October 1st and I would love to see some pictures before then.

Had shot a target from my stand, months before season 10+ years ago, and had a FAT 9 point walk ONTO the spot where the target had been, it was colder than my ex's heart [ freezing cold ] and when I drew the nock broke. THAT SUCKED! It'll get better.

Trapper, arrrrrrgh! Dang, glad I'm not using expanding broadheads; just normal ones. Better luck next time. Broken nock - doh! That must have been one coldhearted ex for it to be cold enough to break your nock. Beretta, you post leads me to a question that I will now start a new thread on.....
