Today was youth day in Eastern NC, where kids under 18 can take a deer using archery/muzzleloader/firearm of choice a few weeks before the firearms season opens.
My 13 year old has been excited for weeks to get back to hunting. He killed his first deer, a nice 8pt buck, last year in October.
Went out this afternoon and sat in our stand overlooking a peanut field.

Not much activity until around 6pm when a doe came out across the field. She stopped about 225 yards away and started grazing. She got to about 200 yards, and I told him that if he wanted to and was comfortable taking the shot, he could shoot her.
He said that was a bit far, and he didn't want to make a bad shot, so he waited. Over about 20 minutes she worked her way closer, and was about ~140 yards away. At that point he was more comfortable, so he got his rifle in position. I said remember, be steady, exhale and squeeze the trigger. She was perfectly broadside, with her head down when he fired.
She dropped on the spot, kicked a few times, then expired. He made a great shot, bullet entered through the right shoulder, and was a complete pass through exiting just behind the left shoulder.
Super proud of my boy, both for making a good shot and for passing on one he was unsure of. Great start to the season.

Congrats! I’m assuming you’re out East where the season starts a little earlier than wnc. I’ve never thought of hunting over peanuts. Clearly it works though.

Yep we're out in Lenoir County.
Deer eat the leaves and vines of the peanut plants, and will dig up the peanuts and eat them too. They usually rotate this field between soybeans, sweet potatoes, and peanuts. So it's almost always good for hunting.

Congrats to you and your son. Are those the flat base or boat tails? Just curious, I have a couple hundred spbt's loaded up and ready to go from kast year that I didn't get to use. Real accurate in my savage m11.

Thanks.
They are the boat tails. It's actually factory loaded Hornady American Whitetail ammunition. I've got some 100gn Sierra Gamekings loaded to do some ladder testing with after deer season.
