Today was youth day in Eastern NC, where kids under 18 can take a deer using archery/muzzleloader/firearm of choice a few weeks before the firearms season opens.
My 13 year old has been excited for weeks to get back to hunting. He killed his first deer, a nice 8pt buck, last year in October.
Went out this afternoon and sat in our stand overlooking a peanut field.
Not much activity until around 6pm when a doe came out across the field. She stopped about 225 yards away and started grazing. She got to about 200 yards, and I told him that if he wanted to and was comfortable taking the shot, he could shoot her.
He said that was a bit far, and he didn't want to make a bad shot, so he waited. Over about 20 minutes she worked her way closer, and was about ~140 yards away. At that point he was more comfortable, so he got his rifle in position. I said remember, be steady, exhale and squeeze the trigger. She was perfectly broadside, with her head down when he fired.
She dropped on the spot, kicked a few times, then expired. He made a great shot, bullet entered through the right shoulder, and was a complete pass through exiting just behind the left shoulder.
Super proud of my boy, both for making a good shot and for passing on one he was unsure of. Great start to the season.
rifle is a Ruger American Compact in .243 win, shooting Hornady 100gr interlocks
