So, I am not a huge "tactical" knife guy, but I love my Spydercos and my Griptilian. It's a matter of loving some specific features really: Thumb-holes and pocket clips are great! Still, after reading tales of slip-joint love from guys like SM, and ArfinGreebly and others for years, I wondered what I was missing. I mean, at some point along the way, I had developed a pretty firm opinion that slipjoints were not for me. Not because of any unnatural hatred of slip-joints, but just because I don't like stuff rattling around in my pockets, and because the blades themselves seemed so..., well, not as great.
Regardless, for a long time I have been considering buying a Case knife, mainly because I wanted a pretty one for the collection, not because I had any real interest in carrying or using one. Then, the other day, my co-worker walked in and said "Dude, check this out" and handed me a mini-trapper that he had received as a wedding gift. I have to admit, I liked it. I really liked it. I don't know where or how I went wrong in my opinions of these knives, but I handled his and realized that the time had come to buy one, and that I really liked the Trapper model. Having seen a picture of the Wharncliffe trapper somewhere, I decided that would be the ticket and so after searching for a couple of weeks, I found the one I wanted (a 2007 blue mini-trapper) and pulled the trigger.
I carried it exclusively for the last week, and while I won't be selling my Spydies anytime soon, I have to admit, I really enjoy carrying it. It is a more office-friendly knife, although I never had any problems from anyone with anything I have ever toted around before. It takes a heck of an edge, the wharncliffe blade is as delightful as I thought it would be, it is aesthetically pleasing, and my average work day doesn't specifically require any one-handed opening. Most surprisingly, I never felt uncomfortable with it in my pocket, which shocked me. I don't even like to carry change in my pocket, but the mini-trapper rides like a champ. Definitely, this knife is a keeper, and I can see spending more money on a couple other Case knifes, specifically another Trapper, as I really like the design.
On the negative side, it is slower to get out of my pocket. At work, not such a big deal, but some of my other knife tasks make this irritating. Also, the one-handed opening that my Spydies allow is genuinely more useful in a variety of situations, as is the generally larger blade on my Endura and Griptilian. I will carry those knives, but somewhat less given that the bulk of my week is spent behind a desk.
Last points: The lack of a locking blade is not an issue, nor did I expect it to be. I know how to handle a knife safely, and so the lack of a lock just wasn't a point of contention with me. Also, I ordered my knife from the Case Outlet, and the service was outstanding. From ordering to the day I received it, including Labor Day, took only 4 days. Plus, shipping was only $3.50 or so.
