Quick review (I am in a hurry):
Took delivery of my AAC suppressor a week or so ago. I had never heard a centerfire rifle suppressor previously. I had no idea what to expect. The M4-2000 uses a special flash suppressor to allow it to quick attach/detach. Most of my regular shooter AR15s are "post ban" guns with muzzle brakes welded on, so I decided on the spur of the mement to unscrew the flash suppressor on my Colt SP1 just so I could try out the suppressor (I kind of regret this now because I wanted to keep that gun original-hopefully I can get the flash suppressor/LocTite to come off with heat ?). The SP1 is equipped with one of those old-school Colt 4x scopes that mount on the carry handle. The scope was zeroed with 55 grain ammo.
I took the rifle/suppressor out to my local gun club today. There are two key points in this brief evaluation: noise and accuracy.
Using PMC 55 grain factory ammo, my ears equate the sound as being about equal to a .22LR rifle. You definitely can shoot it without hearing protection and it is not uncomforatable at all. The guy on the bench next to me was shooting several .22LR handguns and they were considerably louder than my AR15. I own .22 LR suppressors, I own a 9mm handgun suppressor, I have fired several submachineguns equipped with suppressors: I was much more impressed with this 5.56 suppressor than any other suppressor I previously heard. This takes a VERY loud report and brings it down to a level that would be perfectly comfortable without hearing protection. I feel that it makes more of a dramatic difference than any other suppressor I have heard.
I didn't do any SERIOUS accuracy testing today. But, our club has a steel plate out at 400 yards (someone told me they lasered it and it is actually at 385 ????). The plate is smaller than a man's chest: if you can hit that plate, you would definitely be hitting a man COM everytime. Anyway, I set the little Colt scope at 400 and from a sandbag/benchrest I could hit that plate every time. 30 round mag, 30 hits: with no adjustment to the scope at all. I removed the suppressor and shot with the same results. I realize this isn't benchrest accuracy, but the bottom line is that the suppressor doesn't change the point of impact enough at 400 yards to cause you to miss a human sized target.
