About DA Revolvers

Nice article, thanks for the link. I've read several of Revolver Guy's articles, he writes well and keeps your interest, doesn't talk down to you but keeps the technical jargon to a level everyone can fathom. Looks like Kimber really did their homework on the design. Too bad S&W couldn't have come up with this ten years (or more) earlier than Kimber did.

Back in the day, I knew a fellow who went around the guns stores as
a distributor of Pachs and Hogues rubbers. It was a booming business
as shooters bought revolvers and at least half dumped the factory
wood in favor of his rubber models.

Then S&W and later Ruger started supplying rubber grips as factory
issue and the distributor's business went down, down, down, way down.

Now probably half the revolver buyers dump the rubber and go after wood.

S&W today even supplies some models with wood stocks and rubber stocks.

I like Wood… I really do. But they shoot like crap!

It doesn't have to be either/or. Comfort is dependent on fit, not material. Rubber doesn't guarantee comfort and wood does not preclude it. I choose the design based on function and the material based on looks. On DA's, a properly designed Roper in whatever hardwood or micarta tickles my fancy is infinitely more comfortable than any rubber grip I've ever held.

Back when I was doing a lot of competition shooting with my 44mag., I was always trying to get better scores, so I had a custom set of wood grips made for me, to fit my hand, they were MUCH better than the factory grips, and yes, they were pretty. (I forget who I had make them)

Anyway, my scores did go up, but I was dealing with Pachmayer quite a bit back then and I was there talking with Frank, when I got the idea that I wanted to try his rubber grips. I was shocked to see that one model was the exactly like my custom wood grips, but of course made from rubber.

After getting those rubber grips on my 44, low and behold, my scores climbed again, plus they "felt" like the 44 had less recoil! I was amazed and shortly later, I went back to wood and my scores returned to where they were before the switch to rubber. There's no question the rubber grips made me a better shooter!

Lastly, I won 13 matches in a row after putting on those "rubber" grips, so I'll be staying with them!!

All my harder kickers wear synthetic grips but one, a 6” Model 66. That has Thai wooden grips on it.

Synthetics are a Godsend on the shorter/smaller magnums. Wooden grips on my 2.5” Model 19 or 3” 13 are not much fun with 158 gr magnums.

YMMV

Stay safe.
