Academy the latest to pull MSR sales

My Walmart did last summer. Nothing "tactical"...

Other than ammo (no 22) it's pretty boring to walk thru Sporting goods now.

I don't believe Walmart's decision to stop selling ARs was political just business. Their prices were high and there are so many vendors in the market they were not moving enough product to justify tying up their money.

Walmar's decision was sales related.

Dick's was political.

I'll have to ask the local Academy mgr what is going on.

WalMart said it was sales related which sounds bogus to me since MSRs are the most popular rifle, or at least one of them, being sold in the country today. It was PR related and they wanted to avoid any negative publicity at the time of the next mass shooting. That's just my opinion, but I don't see how it made sense from a business/economic perspective.

Good grief. You sell ARs. You have the biggest display of them in the area. SO the local news outlet without a clue and trying to find something to scare the hell out of the locals to up their ratings shows up with a camera crew to do a remote inside your store. Or maybe they send in a intern with a cell phone, 1080P is pretty common and the pictures will be fine. Maybe you intercept them at the door, and end up on the news telling them they can't record inside, obviously to prevent anyone from knowing about your stash of semi-legal murdering tools for sale to unstable nutcases.

Either way, you loose. Your store will be featured at 6 o'clock with a voiceover explaining how easy it is to murder your fellow citizens. The news outlet wins, because it was shocking.

Or you can just put the ARs in the back room for two weeks while this blows over.

They're avoiding bad press until this all blows over. The news teams are out doing hit-jobs on all the major retailers. Academy doesn't want to look like the "merchant of death" on the evening news. Sounds fine to me. If they were stopping sales, that's one thing.

Academy is a major retailer with other products. News teams in stores scare away customers. It's just doing business.

Dick's received a giant ration of poo from a lot of folks after Sandy Hook because they pulled their ARs. I did not join in the dogpile, and here's why: at least they still sell guns.

Dick's is primarily a store that caters to golfers and the kind of people who spend $40 on a stretchy t-shirt to do yoga in. I'm happy when these 'normal' people who do 'normal' things walk into a retail store catering to 'normal' athletes and see a wall full of guns in their 'normal' store. The message they get is that guns are 'normal' items that are purchased by people like them.

Dick's could very easily have replaced that entire wall of guns with another rack of UnderArmour shirts, fishing rods or running shoes. How would we have benefitted from that? I think we should be thankful they still sell guns at all. I don't think we have Academy Sports here, but let's cut them some slack wherever they are, shall we?

I didn't shop at Academy before for anything, especially firearms. I went in to buy a cheap 12ga Stevens shotgun and it was one of the worst experiences buying firearms I ever had. I never went back and I didn't get the shotgun. No crying from me.

Normally I would say their sandbox, their rules. It's the way Dicks did it cancelling existing orders, even preventing people from picking up their orders after the were informed their orders had arrived.

Walmart sold all existing stock and it took weeks/months. CTD suspended new orders until they could be sure they were not taking more orders than they could fill. I have no issue with that. In contrast, I will never shop at Dick or Field and Stream.

Having read the link it appears Academy wants to run and hide for a bit!

I believe post 9 and 10 are on.

Reducing potential negative exposure for the time being.

For those that have an "in their face" I'm gonna leave all the guns out despite what anyone says, they can stick it in their ear attitude, Id suggest they can mange their store whatever way they choose. I don't fault Academy for their decision at the moment.

Just read a little bit on facebook saying Danial Defense has severed relation with Academy because they pulled the AR rifles off shelves. I haven't been in a store today...so I didn't see this personally. (take it with a grain of salt)

I understand that strategy- pull them from display while the heat is on. I just strongly disagree with it.

It sounds pretty cowardly to me. It also sounds like an indirect endorsement that MSR's are intrinsically too powerful and just downright evil for citizens and should only be in the hands of the military/police. Lest we forget, a poor NY journalist recently suffered PTSD after firing one.

DD summed it up nicely, "Academy’s decision clearly segregates firearms by their appearance, which sends a dangerous message to our politicians that it’s acceptable to do so. We as an industry must stand and fight, together."

Interesting. Well, Academy will be now getting $0.00/year from my firearms budget. Capitalism at work.

walmart dropping the ar was very sales related. They had 6920's on the shelf for a year at 1050$ and coulent sell them. so they lowered the price, more and more. Finally got rid of them at $650, along with the bushmasters and windhams. they took up space, and no one would buy new until they took a loss to bring in something easier to sell. Walmart does not care about public thought, as long as they make money, thats what they are going to do. All those other company's jumping in before that? probably political.

Just want to make sure I'm reading that correctly- so Walmart stopped AR sales because they weren't able to turn a profit on them? This despite numerous other retailers being able to do precisely that? No, no, no. It was that they didn't want to be associated with selling evil black rifles. Their own public statement on the matter said it was because their typical firearms customers were hunters and they were going to cater solely to them. It's laughable any retail giant would permanently stop sales of any product based on a brief sales trend. Walmart can make a profit on ARs. Walmart can make a profit selling ice to Eskimos. They choose not to because of the negative image the media has created of ARs. They don't want to be associated with it every time there's a mass shooting. That aversion may be smart business-wise, but it further jeopardizes the future status of MSRs.

I just finally "bit the bullet" and bought my DPMS AR-15 from Academy locally last week. They had about eight on the shelf. Glad I got it when I did. Even though they will apparently still sell them, it will affect their sales if guys do not see them displayed.

I'm left wondering why y'all buy firearms from those folks anyways? To save $20-30 over what you'll pay at your LGS? The LGS that has a gunsmith on staff to handle any of your problems? The LGS that'll ship your gun back for you if they can't fix it? The LGS that'll special order whatever you want, no matter how 'unique' we think it is?

Get to know your LGS. Find one you like and trust. Be loyal. It'll pay off.
